Library computer services & facilities

Where are the computers?
The majority of the over 150 WindowsXP computers the Library manages are located on the first floor of the Regenstein and Crerar Libraries. However, all library locations have computers.

Who can use these computers?
These computers require all users to log in. Please see Library Computer Access for more information.

What software is installed on the library computers?
These computers have the following installed: Internet Explorer, Microsoft Word 2000, Excel 2000, Microsoft PowerPoint Viewer, Adobe Reader 7.0 SSH Secure Shell, and QuickTime Player.

Which Library computers can I print from?
Any of the computers managed by the Library can be printed from. At this time, printing is not available from the NSIT WebStations.

How do I print from the library's computers?

1. Select a printer (B&W or color).
2. Enter a name for your print job & click OK.
3. Go to the nearest network printer to release your print job. If not printed within 2 hours, the job will disappear from the print queue.
NOTE: there is a fee for printing.

How do I save files?
You can save files to a floppy disk, a USB drive, or the temporary folder at C:\Public. Please note that the contents of this folder are public and are deleted nightly.

Can I burn a CD?
There are 4 computers on the first floor of the Regenstein Library that have writeable CD-ROM drives.

Are there scanners available in the Library?
3 scanners are available in the Regenstein Library: one 8 1/2" x 11" (near the printers on the 1st floor) and two 11" x 17" (Room 420 & Room 370).

Can I listen to CDs or watch DVDs on the computers?
All the public computers can read CDs. Only 4 computers have DVD drives. There is also DVD viewing equipment on the third floor of the Regenstein Library, room 306.

Bibliographic Management

What bibliographic management tools does the Library support?
The Library supports RefWorks and EndNote through reference appointments and workshops.

Soup Up Your Laptop

Can I connect my laptop to the campus network?
Ethernet and wireless networks are available in most of the libraries for laptop users. These networks are managed by Networking Services and Information Technologies (NSIT) and access is limited to current students, faculty, staff and alumni who have claimed their Alumni CNetID .

Can I print from my laptop?
Users can print from their laptops after installing the free software specific to the library where they wish to print.

Mac Leopard is not currently supported. We hope to have updated drivers in October

Computing support

  • For problems with Library-maintained computers that do not require you to log in, please contact staff at the nearest service counter (reference, circulation, etc.).
  • For problems with NSIT computers (WebStations, NSIT cluster machines) contact NSIT Support Line: 8:30AM to 6:00PM, Mon - Fri (773) 834-8324

    Other computing services & facilites

  • WebStations in Regenstein Library and the Crerar Cybercafe on the lower level provide "hit-and-run" email checks and web surfing. These WebStations are provided by NSIT and access is limited to current students, faculty, and staff.
  • Computing (USITE) labs that are located in Regenstein, Crerar, and Harper Libraries. These are managed by NSIT and provide access to a range of hardware and software. Access is limited to current students, faculty, and staff.
  • The Maclab (Computer Science Department's Instructional Lab) is located on the A level of the Regenstein. Access is limited to current students, faculty, and staff.
  • Law students may access the computer labs on the second and third floors of the D'Angelo Library. The Lab Manager (Room 305, 5-5875) should be contacted for questions about these computers or printers.
  • Students, faculty, and staff interested in obtaining Microsoft products should see the Microsoft Campus Agreement for details on eligibility and how to obtain software.
  • The Connectivity Package is a collection of software, pre-configured for use in the University computing environment. If you are in the Chicago area and want to connect to the University's network, the Connectivity Package contains all necessary software and instructions on how to connect.
