Sources for Market Research

The University of Chicago Library has access to market research reports through a variety of online sources. The Library does not purchase individual reports due to their high cost and time-specific content.

Key Resources
Mintel Reports
You must create a personal profile to access reports in Mintel.
Mintel produces full length market research reports on consumer markets in the U.S. and U.K., with a few reports on other countries, primarily in Europe. These reports have detailed data on consumer demographics, market segmentation and supply and distribution structures.
Mintel is a British company and the database uses British terminology and dates -- day/month rather than month/day. It also uses both American and British English, depending on the market the report is covering.
Global Market Information Database (GMID) Reports on consumer markets around the world. The reports are briefer than in Mintel but GMID covers more countries. Use the browse reports option to browse by industry or country. We especially recommend the Consumer Lifestyles reports, which give detailed information on consumer demographics in over 70 countries. GMID also contains summary statistics on consumer products in the menu search
GMID is produced by Euromonitor, a British company. The database uses British spellings and terminology.
Business Monitor Online Industry reports and forecasts for these major industries: Autos, Chemicals, Commercial Banking, Defense & Security, Food & Drink, Freight Transport, Information Technology, Infrastructure, Insurance, Oil & Gas, Petrochemicals, Pharmaceuticals, Telecommunications and Tourism. Covers most industrialized nations.
Secondary Resources
Investext via Thomson ONE Banker Analyst reports from major investment banks and brokerages. These include industry analyses that can contain detailed information and forecasts for companies and industries. However, searching is limited to citations rather than the text of the reports so it can take some time to locate relevant reports. Look for the reports that are 20+ pages as one way to quickly evaluate your results.
Snapshots North America Summary reports on industries in the U.S. and Canada. These provide summary statistics, market share information and five year growth forecasts. These are best as quick sources of industry statistics.
Selected reports are embargoed to our account (primarily automotive related industries).
Standard & Poor's NetAdvantage Choose Industries to browse S & P's Industry Surveys. These cover trends in major industries and are a good source for forecasts and general statistics.
Business Source Complete Includes market research reports and trade publications. Perform a search and then select "Market Research Reports" on the results screen to limit to these sources.
