After receiving my first Master's degree at Cornell, I worked a few years for Prof. Fred McLafferty, first as coordinator of the data entry and editing portion of a major update the Wiley/NBS Mass Spectral Database, and later as Editorial Associate for the American Chemical Society journal, Accounts of Chemical Research. It was during this time that I decided to pursue a career in the area of chemical information. When the opportunity arose a few years later to pursue a second master's degree, this time in library science, I enrolled at the University of North Texas where I concentrated my studies in the area of science reference and computer applications in libraries. After graduation I took a position on the library faculty of Lamar University in Beaumont, TX as science librarian and online search services coordinator. My job later expanded to include management of a local area network of CD-ROM workstations. During my time at Lamar University, I also served as Associate Editor for a newsletter, Review of Texas Books. I came to University of Chicago in 1993 as Chemistry Librarian/Chemical Information Specialist. In 1999, I assumed additional responsibilities for collection development and management in the geophysical sciences. In 2003, physics and technology (including materials science) collection development and management was added to my job.
I have been and continue to be involved in planning,
implementing and managing a variety of information services, both
in the former Chemistry Library and in the John Crerar Library. I
am especially interested in the role of electronic journals in
science libraries, science information databases (including
SciFinder Scholar, Beilstein CrossFire, INSPEC, Web of Science, and
GeoRef), development of patron empowerment and remote services
(like online recalls and email reference), HTML and WWW development
of resources useful to researchers in chemistry, physics,
geophysical sciences and related areas, and education/training of
researchers in chemistry, physics and geophysical sciences
information retrieval and in the use of productivity tools
(including EndNote).
