Taking Materials Abroad
You can check material out, however books can be recalled from you if another user needs to borrow them. If this happens, you'll have less than a week to return the items, and overdue fines are quite steep. If you do decide to take items outside of the area, you'll need to find a reliable (insured and trackable) method for quickly mailing the items back to campus.

Renewal Policies
You may renew your books without actually bringing them to the Library. This type of renewal is called a comprehensive renewal. You can renew a book out on general loan three consecutive times using comprehensive renewals. If you still would like to renew the book after the third renewal, you must bring the book to a University of Chicago Library circulation desk, where circulation staff will renew the book for you. There are two ways to do a comprehensive renewal of your books:1. Go to the "My Account" page within the online catalog. Enter in your barcode and PIN. Click on "Items Out."If you are unable to return materials, please contact circ-services@lib.uchicago.edu for advice.
2. Email renewals@lib.uchicago.edu with your renewal request. You will need to include your name, your library barcode or student ID. You will receive an email reply confirming that your books were renewed.

Staff will copy the material for you and post them to the web for you to retrieve. There is a nominal fee for this service. To reduce the need for billing, you may wish to set up a deposit account with the Library before you leave. Any unused funds in this account can be refunded to you upon request.
