BRITISH DOCUMENTS- PARLIAMENTARY PAPERS AND OTHER SOURCES
Introduction:
"The University of Chicago holds a long run of the British Parliamentary Papers bound as Sessional Papers. It is considered to be virtually complete from about 1898, with incomplete sessionally-bound materials from the early 1890's. For the earlier 19th C. we have very large numbers of single blue books and publications bound and cataloged as separates; and a considerable number of House of Lords Papers -- many thought to be substantially identical to corresponding House of Commons Papers -- kept in a separate arrangement, for which there is an unpublished local finding list held by Reference staff.
House of Commons Parliamentary Papers digitized database for the House of Commons Parliamentary Papers. HCPP now includes House of Commons sessional papers from 1801-present. Page images and searchable full text for each paper along with detailed indexing are featured. There will be ongoing regular releases of papers from current sessions of Parliament.
It was in 1801, when speaker Charles Abbott ordained that House of Commons bills, reports, accounts, and papers should be bound together with the Papers by Command in a conventional, subject-based order. In our library, these Sessional Papers begin to appear on the shelf only in the 1890's, though they are essentially perfect after that time.
But we have a very extensive collection of 19th century papers cataloged as separates, on every possible subject -- prison reform, slave trade, provisions for Scottish railways, relations with Argentina, sequential reports of the Manuscript Commission, etc. These extremely numerous papers are found in the catalog under the appropriate headings and titles and subjects, but they are not massed on the shelf at fJ301.K6 (on-campus storage: paged daily Mon. thru Fri.) like the post-1890's material. These papers are more frequently House of Commons publications , but there are important House of Lords titles treated this way also.
In addition we have a very large stock of House of Lords papers that substantially duplicate parallel titles published by the House of Commons. These are kept in storage in the basement of Harper and are accessible only through a finding list.
We also hold substantial runs of some earlier (18th century) serials and compilations of Parliamentary papers and proceedings in the original, and in some reprint series.
We hold an exhaustive collection of the Parliamentary Papers (binder's title British Sessional Papers), including the House of Commons Bills, Reports, Accounts, and papers, from 1731 to 1906 in microcards Microprint J1
We can borrow, in hard copy, volumes of the Irish University Press 1000-volume set of reprints of 19th century parliamentary papers from The Center for Research Libraries; and fiche from the 1731-1906 set from other libraries if our microprints are not satisfactory for a specific use.
