WHEN A BOOK OR JOURNAL IS DAMAGED library staff initiate a process which, upon conclusion, will hopefully see the material returned to the shelves. This process often comes at a great cost. MONEY is used not only for the materials involved in repairing damaged material and the cost of replacing a book, but also in library staff time and resources. It is not as simple as going to Amazon.com and purchasing a new book or using duct tape to reattach a damaged spine. Costs to repair and replace library materials vary depending on the extent of the damage, and/or the cost of the book itself. In some cases the damages are too severe to fix, and the book is no longer being produced (out-of-print), so a new copy cannot be purchased. Therefore this book will no longer be available to University of Chicago students, staff and faculty. Ultimately, it is this group of people who suffer when books and journals are damaged. |

Cost of the Book: $
55.00 This book has had numerous pictures and pieces of text cut from its pages. While in some cases pages can be photocopied from the same book (held in another library), in other cases it cannot be done because most of what has been cut is photos or graphics. Reproductions could never be compared to the originals. |

CANNOT BE REPAIRED OR
REPLACED Highlighted books cannot be repaired. This book cannot be replaced either since it is now out-of-print. While there may be new editions being produced and held in the library it is good to have older editions available as well. For example, if all of the most recent editions are in use, students, staff and faculty can rely on older editions for valuable information. Therefore, even though this is an old edition, the book is still valuable. Highlighting has destroyed some of its usefulness. |

Repairs = $ 50.00 per
book Instead of photocopying the pages in this book, a patron decided to rip out the pages. Preservation staff will have to locate this book at another library, request that the missing pages be photocopied, have the photocopies sent to the University of Chicago, and then place the photocopies into the book following a special procedure. This entire process can take anywhere from a few weeks to a few months. During this time the book is unavailable to users. |
