| Welcome to Eckhart
Library The Eckhart Library collection of approximately 55,000 volumes contains research level monographs and scholarly journals in mathematics, mathematical statistics, and computer science. The mathematics collection includes materials in all areas of pure and applied mathematics. The mathematical statistics collection covers all research areas and also contains general presentations of value to users doing statistical analyses. The computer science collection strengths are theoretical computer science, including mathematical aspects of computing, computational complexity, algorithms, logic, and the use of computers to solve mathematical and scientific problems. Popular computing materials are located in the John Crerar Library. Because of space constraints, selected materials, including inactive journals, older books, and elementary titles, in all three subjects have been transferred to the John Crerar Library General Information
Reference Services Reference service is available at the Circulation Desk during all open hours. For more complex reference assistance, please contact the Bibliographer, Brenda Rice -- 773-702-8774 or bsr2 (at uchicago.edu). The Reference Collection, located on two index tables in the Reading Room, includes standard dictionaries, encyclopedias, directories, and biographical sources plus the major journal indexes for each discipline. Eckhart Library has five network workstations for accessing the Library Catalog, Library web pages, and the Web. The Eckhart Library subject web pages provide links to electronic reference resources. Circulation Check outs Materials can be charged during all hours that Eckhart Library is open A current university ID or library card is required to check out items Regular stack materials circulate for quarter or indefinite loan period Bound journals circulate for 7 days and are not renewable Unbound journals circulate for 2 hours only Returns All materials except reserve items should be returned to the Circulation Desk drop box during library hours Reserve items should always be returned directly to a circulation staff person After hours, all materials can be returned using the two exterior bookdrops Renewals: Library materials may be renewed either in person at the Circulation Desk or remotely using the Borrower Information feature in Horizon. Any renewable item can be renewed three times before the item must be physically brought back to the library. At that time the item can be returned or recharged. Renewals can also be requested via e-mail or US mail; in this case the borrower number should be included with the request. Reserve items, recalled items and 7-day loan items cannot be renewed. A reserve item must remain uncharged and available to other users for at least 30 minutes before the previous borrower can recharge it. Recalls: If you need a book charged out to another borrower, you may use the Make Request function in the Online Catalog or fill out a paper recall slip at any library. Recalls usually take about 8 calendar days, depending on when the borrower who has the book returns it. The library will notify you when the item is returned. Since anyone may recall books from you at any time, don't leave town without returning the items you have borrowed or arranging for someone to return recalled items for you. Fines Recalled materials -- $3.00 per item per day Reserve items -- $1.00 per hour or part of hour; $3.00 for 7 day loans reserve Seven Day Loan -- $3.00 per item per day Quarter Loans -- Unresolved overdue quarter loans will result in: 1)suspension of Library privileges, 2) University restriction with a $25.00 fee, and 3) billing for book replacement ($125.00 per item). Course Reserves Finding Books and Journals Finding books To find a book, search the Library Catalog on any library workstation or remotely on the Web. Select the appropriate search index based on the information available; title, author, subject, series, and ISBN can be searched. If initially unsuccessful, try a few different options, or ask for assistance from library staff. To find a volume in a book series, select Series Keyword and search by series name and number. For example, if you are looking for volume 1022 of Lecture notes in mathematics, input the following search: lecture mathematics 1022. This search will bring up the record for the individual volume. The Library Catalog will provide the call number, location, and circulation status. If the title locates in Eckhart Library and is "not charged", it should be on the shelf. Books shelve by call number. Finding Journals To find a journal, select either Journal Alphabetical Browse or Journal Keyword. ALSO, use the Eckhart Library Serials List (binder located on the Circulation Desk).
