How to Find Books in a Series in Eckhart Library
Finding Books in a Series
Books in a series may be cataloged in two ways: 1) as a serial
where all volumes have the same call number or 2) as individual
books where each volume has a unique call number.
Since it is difficult to know how a particular series is
cataloged, you should search for it in several ways.
- Search for the series title like you would for a journal.
- If you do not find the series title treated as a journal and
you know the author and/or title of the book, search as you would
for a book.
- If you do not find the series title treated as a journal and
you know ONLY the series title and volume number, search as
follows:
- Search the On-Line
Catalog.
- Choose the "Series Keyword" search. Search by series title
keywords AND volume number. For example, to search for v.1100 of
Lecture notes in mathematics, type: lecture mathematics 1100. This
will bring up the record for the individual volume.
- If initially unsuccessful, ask for assistance from library
staff.
Locate the item wanted
- The On-Line Catalog will provide: call number, location, and
circulation status.
- If the item locates in Eckhart Library and is "not checked
out", it should be on the shelf. All books and journals shelve by
call number.
- Consult the Eckhart
floorplan for call number locations.
If the item is "checked out", you may request that the item be
returned for your use
- Click on "Recall Item" beside the item listing.
If the item is "not checked out" and not on the shelf, you may
request that the item be searched
- Click on "Not on shelf?" beside the item listing.
