Eckhart Course Reserves

Eckhart Reserve Collection

The purpose of reserve is to make materials in high demand readily available to all patrons.  There are two categories of reserve materials:

  1. Course Reserve:  Materials requested by faculty and TA’s to be on reserve for a particular course.  Textbooks on course reserve are returned to the general circulating at the end of the quarter.  Lecture notes and problem sets/exams are returned to the instructor at the end of the quarter.  Materials on course reserve may circulate for 2 hours, 24 hours, or 48 hours, depending on expected usage.
  2.  Permanent Reserve:  Some books that are requested for course reserve every quarter are “live” on Reserve year-round.  When not requested for course reserve, these materials circulate for 7 days.  Permanent reserve also include a set of ___ classic mathematics monographs; titles in this Permanent Graduate Mathematics collection circulate for 48 hours.

How To Get Materials From Reserve

You should use Chalk to identify materials on reserve for a specific course.  First log into Chalk, using your CNetID and password.  From your list of courses, choose the course you need material from and click on the link.  Then click on “Library Course Reserves” in the left column.  You must give the library staff person the call number of the item you want to checkout from reserve.

Reserve Circulation

Materials on reserve circulate for 2 hours, 24 hours, 48 hours, or 7 days.  Reserve items are not renewable.  If we have another copy on the reserve shelf, you can recheck the item immediately.  Otherwise, you must wait 30 minutes to allow other students the opportunity to check out the item.

It is your responsibility to know the date and time your reserve items are due, and to return them to the correct library.  The Library does NOT send out due data notices for reserve items.  So it is VERY important for you to check the due date and time on the receipt placed in the item at checkout.  ALWAYS return the reserve item to a staff person when the library is open.  After hours, reserve materials can be returned using the two book drops – 1) in the hallway outside the library door and 2) in the outdoor archway between Ryerson and Eckhart.  When a reserve item is returned in a bookdrop, it will be checked in the next morning when the library opens; the library’s circulation system will automatically change the checkin time to the closing time of the day before..

The fine for overdue reserve items is $1.00 per hour per item to a maximum of $75.00 per item.  We may also release your name to your classmates and/or instructor.  Normal lost book fees and restriction fees also apply (see the Library’s fine policies).

Placing Materials on Reserve

If you are teaching a course in mathematics, statistics, or computer science, please tell us as soon as possible so we can set up a course listing for you. Here's what we need:

If you've taught the course before and would like to use the same textbooks as before, just let us know and we can reactivate them.  Please make sure to inform us about any new editions of the books or other changes you would like to make.

You can email us this information (eckhart-reserve@lib.uchicago.edu) or stop by the circulation desk and talk to us in person.

If we have your books in the library, we will put them on reserve.  If we don't currently own the books, we will order them.  We may contact you for more information if the book is unavailable.

If you have any other questions about your course, please contact us at eckhart-reserve@lib.uchicago.edu, or by phone at 773-702-8778.
