Title: Library Clerk I/ Entry & Exit Control Attendant

Work Schedule: 36.5 hours per week: Sun 10pm - Mon 6am; Mon 10pm - Tues 6am; Tues 10pm - Wed 6am; Fri 5:30pm-10pm; and Sat 10pm-Sun 6am
This position is represented by the bargaining unit.
Under the direction of the Privileges/Entry-Exit Control Supervisor and closely following departmental guidelines and procedure, the Entrance/Exit Attendant is responsible for all facets of Entry-Exit control for the Regenstein Library and the Crerar Library. Performs work in accordance with Library standards and procedures.
Customer Service 25%
- Ensures that users are welcomed and assisted in finding the needed staff member, department or meeting place.
- Assists readers who are having difficulties using their Entry-Exit access cards at the turnstiles.
- Answers basic inquiries and gives general directions relating to the library and to the University community.
- Uses the University's and Library's home pages, as well as written information from a variety of sources, to provide campus wide and library information to patrons seeking information and directions. Is knowledgeable and informed about ongoing library events -- including library functions, training sessions and meetings. Monitors a daily calendar of library events online.
Security and Policy Enforcement 50%
- Visually checks identification for valid entrance of all patrons/visitors without Entry-Exit access cards.
- Monitors Entry-Exit control system to determine whether a patron has valid access and explains problems to patron as necessary.
- Creates day passes for University users that do not have their IDs or determines if patron is eligible to sign in to the Library.
- Remains alert and vigilant in order to ensure the security of library materials. When exit alarm sounds, ensures that all materials are properly checked out before the user is given permission to exit by checking the contents of book bags, back packs, etc. for books not properly checked out.
- Prohibits patrons from bringing open beverages and food into the library.
- Directs patrons without valid Entry-Exit passes to the Identification & Privileges Office, and/or assists them as appropriate when that Office is closed.
- Reports problems regarding Entry-Exit/exit to Supervisor, contracted security personnel, and/or University Police as appropriate.
- Maintains a daily log of shift activity that is emailed to other Entry-Exit Control attendants, Supervisors, and Library Administrators.
- Ensures that lobby and Entry-Exit-control desk area are neat and organized before the building opens and throughout the shift.
- Reports maintenance issues to Building Services staff as appropriate.
- Monitors manual sign-in logs for expected visitors/appointments, overnight custodial crew, and unregistered visitors for accuracy and reports issues to Privileges/Entry-Exit Control supervisor.
- Maintains organization of the logs and files completed logs on a monthly basis.
- Responds to internal phone and email messages regarding expected visitors, incorporating the log of such visitors into the daily calendar of events.
- Troubleshoots (e.g. reboots) the entry control system if the system appears to "freeze" and/or "goes down".
- Uses Library circulation system to check in items from IT Services TECHB@R that users return after Circulation has closed.
- Reports the return of items to TECHB@R via email and secures items until IT Services staff retrieve them.
- Handles IDs, wallets, and other found property that's turned in at the Entry-Exit/exit control according to Library policies.
- Assists Privileges/Entry-Exit-Exit Control supervisor with training of new staff.
- Assists Privileges/Entry-Exit-Exit Control supervisor with scheduling coverage for open shifts.
- Candidates must demonstrate the following competencies: manage interpersonal relationships and interact/communicate with clarity, tact and courtesy with patrons, patients, staff, faculty, students and others; communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing; identify priorities; recognize and resolve or refer problems; work effectively with supervision and as a part of a team; use or learn a range of position-related software applications including standard software packages, library systems, email and Intranet;
- Significant customer service experience in a fast-paced library or retail service or similar environment handling public contacts with patience, courtesy, firmness, and diplomacy required;
- Demonstrated orientation to detail, with ability to sustain attention to detail required;
- Ability to explain and to uphold library policy consistently and courteously but in a firm manner required;
- Ability to articulate policies to users, to enforce these policies, to make appropriate exceptions when allowed, and to refer problems to a supervisor when necessary required;
- Ability to evaluate and assess problems and issues with skill and diplomacy and respond quickly to potentially volatile security situations required;
- Reliability, punctuality, and the ability to work independently required;
- Ability to maintain a regular schedule required;
- Ability to adapt to flexible scheduling required;
- Willingness and ability to to work evening and weekend shifts required;
- Attention to detail and the ability to perform multiple tasks accurately and simultaneously required;
- Ability to evaluate and assess problems and issues with skill and diplomacy required;
- Ability to give and to follow both oral and written instructions required;

- General computer and typing skills, including e-mail and Internet required;
- Working knowledge of the University of Chicago community preferred;
- Previous library experience preferred.
- May be required to stand for intermittent periods of time.
- Viewing computer monitor for extended periods of time.
- Use of computer keyboard and mouse.
