For University of Chicago Students Only
Student Application
The first step in getting a job at the Library is to fill out a student application online. Please fill out the application completely and accurately. You are encouraged to indicate the positions or departments that interest you, but we ask that you do not contact supervisors directly. Once you fill out the application, it is available for hiring supervisors to review. If you aren't hired, and you are still interested in employment in the Library, your application remains active.
Requisitions & Interviews
When positions become available in the Library, the individual departments (i.e. Circulation, Bookstacks, Acquisitions etc.), will submit a requisition to Library Personnel. Once the requisition is approved, the hiring supervisor will look through the file of online applications and choose suitable candidates to interview. If your application is chosen, you will be contacted via email or telephone to set an appropriate interview time, and you will be asked to bring a copy of your resume to the interview. Open positions are posted in the Library Personnel Office, and on the Library's web site at http://www.lib.uchicago.edu/e/jobs/studopps.html.
I've been hired!
If you are hired for a position, before your first day of work, YOU MUST COME TO LIBRARY PERSONNEL TO FILL OUT ADDITIONAL PAPERWORK (i.e. tax forms, student employment forms, etc.). You must also furnish identification such as a US Passport OR driver's license/state ID/school ID AND social security card (other documents may also be acceptable), that demonstrates your eligibility to accept employment. Library Personnel staff must see the original; photocopies are not acceptable. International students will require additional documentation. Failure to provide these documents within three days of hire will lead to termination. YOU MAY NOT BEGIN WORKING UNTIL ALL PAPERWORK HAS BEEN COMPLETED.
Please be advised that students are employed on a quarter-by quarter basis. Generally, a student may expect to continue in a position for the regular academic year. However, continued employment is based on the library's needs, budget and the student employee's ability to meet departmental performance standards. Your supervisor should be explicit with the beginning and end dates of the position assignment.
Note
While we wish that we could offer everyone a job, it's just not possible. We receive hundreds of applications every year, and there are only a handful of available jobs at a time. Job availability usually depends on student employee turnover, so there is no way to predict when jobs will become available. Just know that when you turn in your application, it is immediately accessible for hiring supervisors to review.
