GAO Reports - the Government Accountability Office (GAO) is the investigative arm of Congress. "Its mission is to support Congress in meeting its Constitutional responsibilities and to help improve the performance and ensure the accountability of the federal government for the American People."

PAIS International (1972-) - Indexes public policy and public affairs literature.

CQ Researcher - Weekly publication covers the most current and controversial issues of the day with complete summaries, insight into all sides of the issues, bibliographies and more.

Congressional Research Service Reports (CRS Reports) - non-partisan and in-depth reports produced by the Congressional Research Service, the research arm of the Library of Congress, on a variety of topics for Congress. They are not widely available, but a few libraries have been collecting and making them accessible:

GovBenefits.gov - Information and eligibility information on more than 1,000 Federal and State administered benefit and assistance programs, including food/nutrition, education, housing, disaster assistance, unemployment/job training, healthcare, small business, and more.

Organizations and Web Resources

Alliance for Economic Justice - "formed by 19 labor unions to heighten visibility and focus attention on the three key economic areas of job creation, health care, and trade. This Web site is designed to highlight the effects these issues have on the livelihoods of working men and women. It will provide current information, links to other news sources including the labor movement, legislative developments and reports, and the opportunity for AEJ members to offer comments and viewpoints on job-related and economic matters.

The Brookings Institution - performs independent analysis of scholarship and public policy. Some coverage of many poverty-related topics, including a welfare reform research project.

Center for Economic and Policy Research - established to "promote democratic debate on the most important economic and social issues that affect people's lives," "CEPR conducts both professional research and public education" with an aim to fill important gaps in the understanding of particular economic and social problems, or the impact of specific policies.

Center for Law and Social Policy (CLASP) - National nonprofit organization involved in law and policy affecting the poor. Includes the CLASP Update newsletter (January 1999- ) on welfare reform developments. Reports include analyses of legislation on poverty-related issues. 

Center on Budget and Policy Priorities -  conducts research on a broad range of government policies and programs affecting low to moderate income people. Reports and topics include poverty and income distribution, federal and state welfare, health policies, food assistance, social security and housing.

Coalition on Human Needs (CHN) - national policy issues related to low-income and other vulnerable populations. Articles, reports, legislative analyses, and data.

The Heritage Foundation - formulates and promotes conservative public policies. Reports and data available on a number of issues, including welfare/welfare reform, education, families, and poverty.

Joblessness and Urban Poverty Research Program - from Harvard University and the National Institute for Social Science Information. Includes substantial online library.

National Law Center on Homelessness & Poverty - "The mission of the Law Center is to prevent and end homelessness by serving as the legal arm of the nationwide movement to end homelessness."

National Center for Law and Economic Justice - Recent case developments, articles and links to poverty law topics.

National Center on Poverty Law-  Nonprofit organization engaged in legal and policy research. Site includes Clearinghouse Review journal, a Poverty Law library, Poverty Law News, and a case database (the cases can be searched or browsed by subject area).

National Equal Justice Library - "nation's first institution established to commemorate the legal profession's history of providing counsel to those unable to afford it."

Poverty & Race Research Action Council (PRRAC) - includes articles, citations to studies, and resource links on different poverty topics.

RAND - performs research and analysis on policy issues. Well-organized site contains reports on research areas such as child policy, education, health and social welfare.

United For a Fair Economy (UFE) - a nonprofit organization raising awareness that "concentrated wealth and power undermine the economy, corrupt democracy, deepen the racial divide, and tear communities apart." It has three program areas: Tax Education Program, Racial Wealth Divide Education Program, and Global Economy Program. The Web site provides general information about the organizations and its projects (such as the Responsible Wealth project and the Racial Wealth Divide Project), and gives access to UFE publications.

The Urban Institute - extensive collection of reports, publications, and data on social topics.

Wex - "collaboratively-created, public-access law dictionary and encyclopedia" sponsored and hosted by the Legal Information Institute at the Cornell Law School; relevant topics include:
