Using the Law Library | Special Collections

Rare Books. Rare books are temporarily stored in a secure section of the South Annex. The collection includes early editions of Anglo-American treatises, statutes, court reports, and some foreign materials. These books are included in the Online or Card Catalogs. Rare books must be paged by staff, and may be used only in the Reserve Reading Room.

Chicago Collection. This archival collection contains one copy of each treatise written by a faculty member, and one complete set of all publications of the Law School.

Alumni Collection. Books from this special collection of books written by alumni of the Law School, may be paged by staff, and are available for 24-hour loan.

Sharp Collection. This is a small collection of ancient and modern classics in literature, recommended by Professor Malcolm F. Sharp, and purchased with funds donated by his students. These books are located in the regular stacks, and may be charged out for the regular loan period. A guide to the collection is available at the circulation desk.

Popular Magazines: The Fulton Room. This lounge area, on the west end of the third floor, was remodeled in 1978 with funds donated by Maurice and Muriel Fulton. The Fulton Room contains the Sharp Collection, and popular magazines and selected newspapers, including the Wall Street Journal.

DVDs. A collection of movies and tv shows on DVD is available at the D'Angelo Law Library Circulation Desk.

Books about Chicago. A collection of books about the City of Chicago is located in the Reserve Reading Room.

Brainerd Currie Papers. This is a collection of the preliminary, revised, and final drafts of Mr. Currie's articles, most of which deal with conflict of laws. Two boxes of miscellaneous materials are also in the collection.

Karl Llewellyn Papers. In this collection are the working papers, correspondence, teaching materials, and published and unpublished manuscripts of Karl N. Llewellyn. The material covers the wide range of his interests, from the Uniform Commercial Code to the Sacco and Vanzetti case to American Indians. There is an excellent guide to the collection by Raymond M. Ellinwood and William L. Twining (XXKF213.L54 guide 1970). The Karl Llewellyn Papers have been moved from the D'Angelo Law Library to Special Collections.

Walter D. Malcolm Papers. This collection contains the correspondence and working papers of Walter D. Malcolm, who is known for his work on Articles 2 and 9 of the Uniform Commercial Code. Correspondence and general papers are arranged chronologically, and U.C.C. working papers are arranged by article number. Consult a reference librarian for access to these papers.

Henry C. Simons Papers. The correspondence, lectures and speeches, unpublished and published manuscripts, biographical documents, and university policy memoranda of this noted University of Chicago economist. There is an excellent printed guide to the collection by Clara Ann Bowler (KA675.B78, behind the Reference Desk). The Simons Papers are at Special Collections.
