The Library continues to work closely with Ameritech Library Services staff on scheduled developments of and improvments to the Library's new integrated library system, Horizon. Developments for the Fall 1996 Quarter include the implementation of several "patron empowerment functions," features that allow Library users to directly access their borrower information and to initiate recall of charged materials.
The Borrower Information function allows University faculty, students and staff to view information about their own library transactions, including lists of items checked out or recalled, any fines assessed the account, and any blocks or other messages placed on the borrower record. The Make Request function allows borrowers to recall or request library materials that are currently charged out of the Library. Searches and recalls can still be requested manually at Library circulation desks.
To protect the confidentiality of individuals' records, users must enter their borrower ID numbers (numbers appear below the bar code on University of Chicago ID's) and a Personal Identification Number (PIN) to activate these features. Faculty and staff should see Circulation Desk staff at any campus library or e-mail firstname.lastname@example.org to request a PIN number in order to make use of these Horizon functions. Help sheets on these new Horizon features are available at Library reference desks.
For questions about how to use these features, contact Sandy Roscoe, Reference Services, at 702-4482 or email@example.com, or send e-mail to firstname.lastname@example.org. For questions about recall status or borrower information, contact Jim Vaughan, Acting Head of Access Services, at 702-8351, or email@example.com
