Dissertation Express

University of Chicago faculty and students have long needed access to selected dissertations written at other institutions. Through Dissertation Express, a joint program of the Library and UMI established in March 1996, faculty and students can buy low-cost printed copies of dissertations. For $24.50, faculty and students can own a digitally printed, unbound copy to use and annotate as they wish. In most cases, users can obtain delivery within three working days of ordering.

Although the Library has agreements with the Big Ten schools and Yale to borrow dissertations written at these schools, it is often difficult to obtain other theses or dissertations, as these materials are frequently not lent. For this reason, the Library has provided the Dissertation Express alternative to borrowing titles needed for research, but will continue to offer traditional Interlibrary Loan services for theses and dissertations as well.

Researchers typically find titles of interest in FirstSearch's Dissertation Abstracts database, accessible through LibInfo http://www.lib.uchicago.edu, the Library's web server (from the Library's home page, choose Indexing and Abstracting Services, then General Sources), or via the public access workstations in the libraries. For users wishing copies of a dissertation through Dissertation Express, order forms are available at the reference desks in Crerar, Law, and Regenstein; individuals must submit (or send) their request with payment to the Interlibrary Loan Office in Crerar, JCL 006. Upon receipt of payment, library staff will transmit the order via the Internet. UMI uses the digitized microform masters, generates high quality shrink-wrapped copies, and sends the copy to the Interlibrary Loan Office by express courier. For dissertations not owned by UMI, interlibrary loan requests can be submitted electronically or on paper forms. During an average week, the Library transmits approximately 5—7 orders for dissertations to UMI.
