- Public Living Within the Chicago Area:
- The Regenstein Library is not generally open to members of the public living in the Chicago Metropolitan area. An INFOPASS may be issued from any Chicago library if the materials needed for research cannot be found at another library in the Chicago area. A reference librarian from another library must certify eligibility and need before the INFOPASS will be issued. The INFOPASS and a photo identification must be brought to the Privileges Office in the Regenstein to obtain up to five Day Passes without fee.
- Public Living Outside the Chicago Area:
- Persons living outside the Chicago Metropolitan area and not affiliated with an accredited college or university will be granted Day Passes for up to five days per University quarter. A valid drivers license or other photo identification must be presented to the Privileges Office in Regenstein Library to obtain a Day Pass without fee.
- INFOPASS
- The INFOPASS System operates in the Chicago metropolitan area. It is intended to aid researchers conducting work in libraries where access is restricted.
- To obtain an INFOPASS, consult a reference librarian at a participating library in the Chicago metropolitan area.
- For the purposes of access to the University of Chicago Library, the INFOPASS will only be granted if the University of Chicago Library is the only owner of the needed materials in the Chicago metropolitan area.
- The user must bring the completed INFOPASS (including the specific names of materials to be consulted), along with a photo identification, to the Privileges Office to receive up to five free Day Passes per University quarter.

- Unaffiliated persons who are engaged in scholarly work may apply for extended privileges by forwarding a written statement (via US Mail or email) of their research needs to the Privileges Office.
- If the Library approves the request, the person may receive Quarterly Reference Privileges for $75
- Researchers must present a current photo ID upon arrival.

Access to Government Documents
The Joseph Regenstein Library and the D'Angelo Law Library are two of a dozen selective depositories for United States government publications in the Chicago area. Most government documents are classified and shelved, by subject, in the general collection of the relevant library unit. Depository documents can be consulted by the public. Patrons are encouraged to visit during the hours: Monday through Thursday, 8:30 A.M. - 7 P.M., Friday 8:30 A.M. - 5 P.M., and Saturday 9 A.M. - 1 P.M. To visit at times other than those listed, or to find out if the Library holds the documents you wish to consult, please contact the General Reference Department at the Joseph Regenstein Library (773-702-4685) or the D'Angelo Law Library Reference Department (773-702-0211).
Other Depository Libraries: If the University of Chicago Library does not hold the documents you need, you may want to consult other depositories in the state of Illinois. The GPO maintains a page to locate Federal Depository libraries.
