Regenstein Computing Services | Ethernet Network Connections

NOTE: beginning Monday, May 12, 2003 users will be required to authenticate using their CNetID and password when accessing the Ethernet network.

Where are the active Ethernet connections?

The Library has activated Ethernet jacks on all floors and in the stacks in Crerar and Regenstein and in the north reading room of Harper Library. In Regenstein, the active Ethernet jacks are labeled and are usually orange.

Connectivity at these sites is being provided by a network protocol called DHCP (Dynamic Host Control Protocol.) In order to make use of these connections, you will need a laptop computer with the hardware and software capable of using DHCP. Library Systems will provide support for DHCP on laptop computers that meet the following requirements:

IBM PC-compatible laptop computers:

Your laptop computers must have at least one PCMCIA (PC card) slot, and you must be running Microsoft Windows 95/98. You will need to install Microsoft's PC/TCP network protocol for Windows 95/98, if you haven't already.

Network adapter: Xircom Performance Ethernet Adapter IIPS, part number PS-CE2-10BT or 3COM EtherLink III PCMCIA, part number 3C589CTP. You will need a connecting cable with an RJ45 connector on each end. These cables may be purchased at the Campus Computer Store (part 10BASET-1).
