Anyone with Library privileges may rent a locker in Regenstein Library. Lockers are rented through the Library's Privileges Office. Lockers may be rented for up to 4 quarters in a row, and may be renewed again each year. The lockers are located in the reading rooms on the A level, and on floors 2-5. You may rent up to two lockers at a time. Fees for locker rental are $5 per quarter.
Lockers may not be used to store perishable food for extended periods of time, or non-charged library materials (including reading room books.) Lockers will be inspected periodically for these items. If they are found, your locker privileges will be canceled for at least two quarters. The rental fee will not be refunded. Materials left in a locker after the expiration date will be removed and held for a maximum of six weeks. After this, unclaimed materials will be discarded or donated to charity.
EXPIRATIONS OF LOCKER PRIVILEGES
- Locker assignments expire the day before the next quarter for which you have not paid a rental fee. This expiration date is written on the notice given to you when you check out the locker. Please keep the form and make a note of the date.
- If you fail to re-rent the locker before that date, you will be sent an email (if you provide us with your email address) prior to the expiration of your locker. This will be the ONLY notice you will receive. (Check to see what email address the Library has on file for you by following this link.)
- If you do not respond to the renewal notice and renew your locker by the end of the day on the Thursday of second week of the quarter, we will remove all material in the locker and charge a $5 locker processing fee to your account. Library staff will check in and return any Library books to the book stacks. We will hold unclaimed personal material for a maximum of six weeks. We then discard all unclaimed material. If you have a locker violation, you will have a week to clear out your locker and if the materials in your locker are not removed by that point, we will hold them in the locker for another two weeks. After that point, the materials left in your locker will be discarded.
CAUSES FOR CANCELLATION OF LOCKER PRIVILEGES
UNCHARGED LIBRARY MATERIALS
You must properly check out all Library items in a locker. If you store uncharged material in the locker, the your locker rental will be cancelled and you will not be able to rent lockers in the following quarters.
CANCELLATION INFORMATION
- If you violate these rules, we will cancel your locker privileges, and you forfeit the rental fee for all lockers you have rented. Violators are not eligible for another locker for at least two academic quarters---longer for more serious or repeated violations. A violation in one locker cancels privileges for all lockers.
- If we cancel your locker privileges, we will email you a notice of cancellation
in your locker(s) and period of cancellation. You will have a week to clear
out your locker and if the materials in your locker are not removed by that
point, we will hold them in the locker for another two weeks. After that point,
the materials left in your locker will be discarded.
MATERIAL LEFT IN LOCKERS
You are responsible for clearing personal and library material (as well as trash) out of your canceled or expired locker. If you do not completely clear out your locker when it expires, we will treat the locker as an unrenewed locker, notify you that it needs to be renewed or cleared out and then discard any unclaimed materials after six weeks. We do not attempt to determine what is trash or refuse. If we find anything remaining in the locker that is not removed or retrieved by the end of the second Thursday of the quarter, we will move the contents of the locker to storage and you will be charged the $5 processing fee for unrenewed lockers. You are also responsible for any fines or other charges on library books left in a locker.
LIABILITY
Neither the University of Chicago nor the Library is responsible for the loss or damage of any material stored in lockers. We are also not responsible for unclaimed and discarded personal materials from expired or cancelled lockers.
