Introduction
The University Library makes some reserve items available electronically to students and faculty associated with the classes for which the material is on reserve. This allows the Library to make these reserve materials available over the campus network 24 hours a day, seven days a week. These resources include journal articles, book chapters, course syllabi, lecture notes, problem sets, homework solutions, etc.Access to Electronic Reserves
Access to the Electronic Reserves system at the University of Chicago Library is limited to the students and faculty for whom the material has been placed on reserve. To access course reserve materials, go to http://chalk.uchicago.edu and log in with your CNetID and password. You'll see your classes listed under the "My Classes" heading. If you follow the link for a specific class, you'll find that "Library Course Reserves" will appear as a link in the maroon frame at the left side of the page. Following that link will lead to a listing of the course reserve materials available through the Library. Both electronic reserves and printed materials available at the Library will be listed. Materials on electronic reserve are those designated as an "electronic resource" in the list. The document has been either scanned and converted to PDF (portable document format) or linked to a resource such as JSTOR or Academic Search Premier. Authorized users may need to download the Adobe Acrobat Reader before viewing and printing electronic reserve files from non-Library computers. There is no charge for access; the charge for printing a copy is limited to the cost to use the campus printing services, if applicable.
Electronic course reserve materials will not be accessible after the conclusion of the course. Please also note that electronic reserve files are not available through the main library catalog.
What can be placed on electronic reserve?
All uses of materials placed on electronic reserves are at the initiative of faculty solely for the non-commercial education usage of students and in support of the University's academic mission. The Library follows the principles of fair use when placing materials on reserve. It does not place materials on electronic reserve if it judges that the nature, scope or extent of the material is beyond the reasonable limits of fair use. A copyright acceptence notice appears on the screen prior to the download of electronic reserve materials.Whenever possible, materials to be copied or scanned for electronic reserves are purchased by the Library, if not already owned.
Compete works, which are in print, are not to be added to electronic course reserves. Complete works, which are out of print, may be added to electronic course reserves with appropriate copyright clearance.
