| Abstract: | Beverly A. Sperring began her career in 1967 with the University of Chicago libraries as an Assistant Reference Librarian in Harper Memorial Library. She continued to have a career with the University of Chicago until her retirement in 2011. Beverly Sperring documented her tenure with the University of Chicago as well as the historic changes of the libraries. The materials in this collection include a library reference manual, a large collection of photographs of library staff gatherings, library exhibitions and remodeling efforts. Also included are Orientation newspapers, ephemeral materials, articles and timelines tracing the history of the University of Chicago library system. |

Originally from Rochester, New York, Beverly A. Sperring graduated from the University of Chicago Graduate Library School in 1966. In January 1967, Beverly began her career with University of Chicago libraries as an Assistant Reference Librarian in Harper Memorial Library. She continued to work at the Joseph Regenstein Library and held various positions in Reference such as Assistant Head of Reference and Information Services Department for a number of years. Sperring also served as Collections Manager of the General Reference Collection which involved the selection and funding of all general reference books in the Reference Dpartment as well as many campuswide databases.
In 1980, the Regenstein reference librarians started the Orientation Newspaper, a publication prepared for fall orientation of incoming, mostly undergraduate, students to expose them to available library services and events. Beverly participated in the creation of this publication and was asked to take photographs for the newspaper due to her interest in photography.
Prior to her library career, Beverly worked for Kodak in Rochester, New York. Her passion for photography enabled her to act as an unofficial photographer who meticulously documented major library events and expansion efforts.
The materials in this collection include a library reference manual, a large collection of photographs of library staff gatherings, library exhibitions and remodeling efforts. Also included are Orientation newspapers, ephemeral materials, articles and timelines tracing the history of the University of Chicago library system. This collection would be of value to researchers interested in University of Chicago library history, the historical development of image technology, and a librarian’s documentation of how libraries have evolved to meet the changing needs of its patrons.
