| Abstract: | The Edgar A. Buzzell Collection consists of glass plate negatives, two photograph albums, newspaper articles, and a painting. The bulk of the collection consists of glass plate negatives of the University of Chicago, Hyde Park, the World’s Columbian Exposition (1893), and downtown Chicago, IL. A smaller portion of the collection is an assortment of collegiate and family photographs. Negatives and photographs from this collection have been digitized and are available as part of the University of Chicago Photographic Archive. |

Edgar Augustus Buzzell, married to Isetta (Gibson) Buzzell, was a graduate of the Old University of Chicago, class of 1886. Buzzell was from Delevan, Wisconsin. His son, Edgar G. Buzzell, a graduate of Brown University and Purdue, married Virginia Hinkins, a graduate of the University of Chicago, in 1915.
The collection includes glass plate negatives, two photograph albums, newspaper articles, and a painting. The glass plate negatives depict primarily the Old University of Chicago, Hyde Park, the World’s Columbian Exposition (1893), and downtown Chicago. Included are negatives of the June 6, 1893 bank run that followed the Stock Market Crash. There are also negatives of President William McKinley’s visit to the city to receive an honorary degree from the University of Chicago on October 17, 1898. There are two photograph albums. The first photograph album listed contains collegiate photographs from the Old University of Chicago, including professors and graduates from the classes of 1885 and 1886. The second album listed contains photographs primarily of Buzzell and various family members, including his wife Isetta. Several of these photographs may have been taken at a resort area near Delevan, WI. The collection also includes newspaper articles on the marriage of Virginia Hinkins, a graduate of the University of Chicago and Edgar G. Buzzell, son of Edgar Augustus and Isetta (Gibson) Buzzell, Hinkins’ secretarial work at the Y.W.C.A in Bloomington, IN, along with Hinkins’ selection as queen of the 1913 spring festival at the University of Chicago. There are original envelopes from the glass plate negatives and photographs of Delevan, WI and Buzzell and Isetta Gibson. The painting, depicting a boat, is by Edgar A. Buzzell.
