The collection consists of materials gathered by Ella Maude Salmonsen (1885-1971), chief of the medical department of the John Crerar Library from 1928 to 1962, for an exhibition on the history of pediatric hospitals in the United States, on the occasion of the annual meeting of the American Academy of Pediatrics in Chicago on Oct. 20-23, 1958.
The Histories of Pediatric Hospitals Collection consists primarily of brochures, pamphlets, articles, and reports from various pediatric institutions across the country detailing their histories. It also contains a registration book and a directory of the 1958 meeting, a short text titled “The Child Bride” about the founding president of the American Academy of Pediatrics Isaac Arthur Abt (1867-1955), and Salmonsen's correspondences related to the exhibition. The locations of the hospitals are given in parenthesis only when disambiguation is necessary.
