| Abstract: | Fifty-three original pencil and watercolor drawings of surgical instruments and surgical procedures, for Bernard and Huette's Précis iconographique de médecine opératoire et d'anatomie chirurgicale (Paris: Mequignon-Marvis fils, 1846, vol. I: text; vol. II: plates). Includes twenty-five engravings made after the drawings, mostly hand-colored. Drawings of surgical instruments are signed by E. Pochet and J. Fouché; anatomical drawings are primarily signed by J. B. Léveillé. Some drawings are lightly annotated in pencil. Some originals differ from the published versions. Inscribed on wrapper: "Annotations autographes de Claude Bernard sur plusieurs dessin dont 2 portent la signature de Claude Bernard." (Only one plate, bottom of plate 80, signed: "Vu Cl.Bernard.") |
