Scope Note

The Center for the Study and Gender and Sexuality was founded in 1996 as the Center of Gender Studies. (See record for Center of Gender Studies for earlier accessions). As stated on the Center’s website, the mission of the center is as follows: “[t]he Center for the Study of Gender and Sexuality seeks to advance new forms of interdisciplinary knowledge which connect academic learning to worldly problems and context.” The Center sponsors faculty research, conferences and campus events. Additionally, the Center also offers major and minor programs for undergraduates as well as graduate certificates. The following faculty members have served as director of the center: Leora Auslander (1996-1999), Laurne Berlant (1999-2000), Rebecca West (2002-2005), George Chauncey (2005-2006), Deborah Nelson (2006-2009), Jane Dailey (2009-2010) and Linda Zerilli (2010-present).

Materials in this accession include information about the Center’s founding, administration, various research projects, and programming and planning of conferences and other events. In the accession is an extensive collection of posters for the various events on and off campus with which the Center was involved.
