Abstract:

Donald J. Dewey (1923-2002) was a professor of economics at Duke University and Columbia University. He earned his bachelor's degree at the University of Chicago in 1943. The materials in this collection were gathered by Dewey in preparation for an article he wrote on economist Frank H. Knight: "Frank Knight before Cornell: some light on the dark years," Research in the History of Economic Thought & Methodology 8 (1990): 1-38.

Biographical Note

Donald J. Dewey was born in Solon, Ohio in 1922. He earned a bachelor's degree at the University of Chicago in 1943 and a master’s degree from the University of Iowa in 1947. He attended the London School of Economics from 1948 to 1949, and taught at Duke University from 1950 to 1959. From there, Dewey went on to teach economics at Columbia University from 1960 to 1992, chairing the department from 1973 to 1976. He was best known for his work on industrial organization, publishing more than 30 articles and 70 book reviews throughout his career. Dewey died on March 5, 2002 in Hastings-on-the-Hudson, New York.

Frank Hyneman Knight (1885-1972) was an economist, professor, social philosopher, and author.

Scope Note

The materials in this collection were gathered by Dewey J. Dewey in preparation for an article he wrote on economist Frank H. Knight: "Frank Knight before Cornell: some light on the dark years," Research in the History of Economic Thought & Methodology 8 (1990): 1-38. The collection contains some of Dewey's personal correspondence concerning the project. The bulk of the collection is made up of Dewey's research material, mainly photocopied correspondence and ephemera belonging to Frank Knight and other members of the Knight family. Materials date from the late 1980s. Dewey photocopied archival materials dating from approximately 1905 to 1951.
