Annetta Maria Dieckmann (1882-1974), born in Titusville, PA., worked actively for many progressive causes, including: feminism, racial and religious discrimination, school segregation, and civil rights. Dieckmann received an AB (1909) and MA degree from Cornell and Columbia Universities.
After a brilliant career at the YMCA, among other institutions, Dieckmann joined the Illinois Chapter of the ACLU in 1953, serving on the Board of Directors. From 1954 to 1960, she served as editor of the publication "The Brief," and she served as full-time Board Secretary from 1956 until her death. Dieckmann's work with ACLU resulted in various state-wide policies and an award named after her.
The collection documents Dieckmann’s years at the ACLU. The folders are arranged alphabetically by title. The majority of folders contain research material, including newspaper, journal, and magazine clippings, as well as ACLU press releases, pamphlets, and minutes of meetings.
