Biographical Note

Charles Ten Broeke Goodspeed (1869-1949) was the eldest son of Thomas Wakefield Goodspeed, one of the founders of the University of Chicago. He received his B.A. from Denison University in 1890, after which he briefly attended the University of Chicago. In 1893, he was awarded a law degree by the Chicago College of Law (Lake Forest University) and was admitted to the Illinois Bar that same year. He was established in his own law firm, Goodspeed and Bates, by 1902.

life-long bachelor, Goodspeed devoted considerable energy to numerous civic, political and religious organizations, most notably the Hyde Park Baptist Church, the Young Men's Christian Association, and the South Park Improvement Association. He was the author of two biographies: the first of his father; the second of Loring Wilbur Messing, an active member of the local YMCA. The last decade of Goodspeed's life was spent in California for reasons of health. He died in Los Angeles in November 1949.
