The Order of the Grey Towers, an organization of the University of Chicago Library staff, was established in 1915. All present and former employees were eligible for general membership, while those with longer terms of service rose at five-year intervals to the Efficient Order, the Expert Order, the Superior Order, or the Supreme Order of the Grey Towers. The organization arranged plays, dinners, and lectures, operated a tea room with current periodicals for the use of the staff, and issued sporadic publications like Harper Weekly and The Grey Towers Gazette. Grey Towers became inactive in the mid-1960's.
The Order of the Grey Towers Records consist of minutes of meetings and reports submitted by such committees as the Nominating Committee, Program Committee, and Public Service Committee, and Executive Committee.
