Abstract:

Chauncy Dennison Harris (1914-2003) received his PhD from the University of Chicago in 1940 and spent the entirety of his academic career with the University's Department of Geography. A pioneer in the field of Slavic Studies, Harris specialized in the geography of the Soviet Union, though was equally well-known for his work in the field of urban geography. Well-respected as a scholar, Harris had contacts with academics all over the world, published widely, and played an important role in the development of American scholarly interest in the Soviet Union. The Chauncy Harris Papers cover many different aspects of Harris' professional career - administrative posts at the University of Chicago, involvement with numerous geographical and academic organizations, scholarly writings and research, teaching materials, extensive correspondence, and academic exchanges with Soviet scholars.

Biographical Note

Chauncy Dennison Harris (1914-2003) served as Professor of Geography at The University of Chicago from 1943, when he was hired as an Assistant Professor, to his retirement in 1984 as Samuel N. Harper Distinguished Service Professor. From 1984 until his death in 2003, Harris remained active within the department as Professor Emeritus.

Born into an academic family in Logan, Utah, Harris quickly developed a taste for geography. His father, who held a Ph.D. in agronomy from Cornell University and taught at the Utah Agricultural College (now Utah State University), encouraged the young Harris to pursue his interest. Indeed, at the end of the second grade, Harris declared to his family that he was going to become a geographer.

Having earned a B.A. in Geography from Brigham Young University in 1933, Harris traveled as a Rhodes Scholar to Oxford, where he completed a second B.A. as well as a Master's Degree. He also took an M.A. from the London School of Economics before returning to the United States, where he completed his Ph.D. at the University of Chicago in 1940. His dissertation was entitled, "Salt Lake City - a Regional Capital in 1940."

Shortly after joining the faculty of his Alma Mater in 1943, Harris was called to military service with the U.S. Department of State, Office of the Geographer. Enlisted in part for his knowledge of German and French, Harris worked as a strategic maps specialist. It was in this capacity, that he developed an avid interest in Russian geography. Over the course of his career, Harris published extensively on both Soviet and post-Soviet geography.

Between his seminal works in the field of American urban geography ("The Nature of Cities" and "A Functional Classification of Cities in the United States") and his work on the Soviet Union, Harris quickly made his mark as one of the world's foremost urban geographers. He also made significant contributions to the geographical study of ethnicity, particularly within the context of non-Russian minorities living within the Soviet Union. Harris traveled regularly to the Soviet Union throughout his career and helped to organise a number of academic exchanges between the United States and the Soviet Union.

Harris was a member of the Association of American Geographers and served its president from 1957 to 1958. Well known internationally, Harris was an honorary member of several foreign geographical associations - the Royal Geographical Society of London, as well as the geographical societies of Paris, Frankfurt, Berlin, Florence, Rome, Belgrade, Warsaw, and Japan. He was also a foreign member of the Polish Academy of Sciences. Recognized worldwide for his contributions to the study of Geography, Harris was granted several honorary degrees and received many awards, including the Alexander von Humboldt Gold Medal of the Gesellschaft für Erdkunde zu Berlin, the Cullum Medal of the American Geographical Society, the Victoria Medal of the Royal Geographical Society, the Alexander Csoma de Körösi Memorial Medal of the Hungarian Geographical Society, and the Honors Award of the Association of American Geographers.

Chauncy Harris died in Chicago in 2003 and was survived by his wife of sixty-three years, Edith, and their daughter, Margaret.

Scope Note

The Chauncy D. Harris Papers contain cover the years 1940 to 2003, though a handful of materials date back as far as 1893. They consist of materials related to Harris' various administrative appointments at the University of Chicago; materials regarding Harris' involvement in a number of different organizations, from the American Association of Geographers to the National Science Foundation. Of particular note here are materials related to Harris' relationship with the government of the United States, including correspondence regarding the prospect of establishing ties with the Soviet academic community and materials related to the funding of Soviet study in the United States. The collection also includes materials related to Harris' published and unpublished writings and talks, as well as research and bibliographical materials; teaching materials, which include lecture notes as well as extensive correspondence with students; correspondence with noted geographers; biographical materials, including extensive files on the various honors and awards bestowed upon Harris throughout his career. Finally, the papers contain materials, including photographs and detailed reports, related to Harris' many trips abroad, with a particular emphasis on his travels in the Soviet Union.

Harris had intended to organize his collection prior to donating it to the University of Chicago's Special Collections, but did not complete the task before his death. He created file summaries for each of the categories that he intended to use for the collection and individual information sheets for each of the folders that would have been housed in these categories. Because the organization was not completed, only some of the folders contained information sheets and the file summaries were scattered throughout the collection. When possible, Harris' categories have been preserved and summaries have been included throughout the collection where appropriate. Otherwise, the entire collection of summaries and information sheets can be found in Series XI Subseries 7.

The Papers are divided into thirteen series.

Series I contains materials, primarily memoranda and reports, related to Harris' administrative appointments at the University of Chicago. Subseries 1 and 2 are particularly interesting as they include materials regarding the establishment of Slavic Area Studies and International Studies at the University of Chicago. In Subseries 1, the materials related to the Ford Foundation, which include grant proposals and reports, offer a good sense of what Slavic Studies looked like at its inception in the early 1950s. Additionally, the reports on graduate student research in the Soviet Union offer a unique glimpse into the experiences of American academics in Moscow. Similarly, in Subseries 2, the materials dealing with the establishment of an International Studies program at the University of Chicago offer insight into the increasingly global focus of the American academic community in the latter half of the twentieth century.

Series II includes materials related to Harris' involvement with the University of Chicago's Department of Geography. The majority of the files in this series are made up of memoranda, newsletters, bulletins, and other official communications. Additionally, a substantial portion of the series is devoted to faculty files, which primarily contain correspondence and biographical materials. Of particular interest is Subseries 3 - The Termination of the Geography Department. The files in this subseries outline the changing structure of the academic departments at the University of Chicago as well as the changing status of Geography as an academic discipline.

Series III contains materials regarding a number of different organisations with which Harris was involved. The most substantial files in this series can be found in Subseries 4 - The American Association of Geographers, Subseries 6 - The American Geographical Society, Subseries 17 - The International Geographical Union, Subseries 36 - The United States Government, and Subseries 37 - The University of Chicago Library. Within Subseries 4, materials related to the invitation to Soviet scholar Grigoryev to visit the U.S. (grouped with the general files) are particularly interesting as they reveal the difficulties with which academic exchanges between the U.S. and the U.S.S.R. were established. Materials housed in Subseries 36 are also of special interest in that they reveal Harris' ties to the government, as an employee with the Strategic Maps Division and as an academic whose interest in the Soviet Union had to be carefully negotiated within the context of the Cold War.

Series IV contains materials related to Harris' writings, including articles and chapters, biographies and memorials, books, reviews, talks and lectures, and translations. It also includes materials related to requests to reprint Harris' writings (Subseries 5). Primarily, these materials consist of drafts, off-prints, and related correspondence.

Series V documents Harris' teaching and is divided into four subseries, the last of which (student files) is restricted in its entirety. Subseries 1 and II, which comprise courses taught at the University of Chicago and elsewhere, consist mainly of syllabi and lecture notes. Subseries 3 is devoted to student photographs. Harris was an avid amateur photographer and the photographic holdings of this collection are extensive, particularly with respect with his students and fellow faculty.

Series VI: Correspondence. Harris corresponded with a variety of individuals and institutions throughout his career. In his own holdings he had separate groupings for correspondence with geographers in the Soviet Union, correspondence related to work on the Soviet Union, and correspondence related to Eastern Europe. These groupings have been maintained here. Additionally, a general correspondence subseries and a personal correspondence subseries have been created. Of particular interest is the Subseries 1 correspondence with Yuri Medvedkov regarding his and his wife's possible emmigration from the U.S.S.R. to the United States. The effort to bring the couple to the United States involved the participation of a wide variety of American academics. Harris' correspondence with Wilma Fairchild, grouped in Subseries 4, is also to be noted. Harris referred to Fairchild as his favorite editor and maintained regular correspondence with her throughout the 1950s and 1960s.

Series VII: Biographical Materials is divided into two subseries. The first contains general files and the second materials regarding Harris' many honors and awards. In Subseries 1, the materials related to Harris' service in the Second World War are particularly interesting in that they contain correspondence that reveals the extent to which geographers were of strategic importance to the war effort. Harris' diary fragment, contained in this folder, as well as the oral history transcripts are also to be noted as documents that reflect a more introspective Harris.

Series VIII: Research, Notes, and Bibliography. As this series reveals, Harris was a prolific bibliographer. Subseries 2 includes extensive geographical bibliography covering many different regions of the world. Subseries 1 contains information regarding geographical maps and atlases as well as some copies of maps and atlases. Subseries 3 consists of research materials. Many of these materials are clearly related to Harris' publications and projects, as indicated by the cross-references to Series IV - Writings and Lectures. Harris also collected information on other geographers, both in the United States and abroad, and Subseries 3 contains several groupings of documents related to this endeavor.

Series IX documents Harris' extensive travels throughout his career, primarily to Europe and the Soviet Union/former Soviet Union. But he did also make trips to South America and East Asia. The documents in this series include - notebooks, photographs, correspondence, travel itineraries, grant proposals, and final reports. Because the bulk of Harris' travels were to the U.S.S.R., these materials have been grouped together under Subseries 1. Subseries 2 consists of materials regarding Harris' trips elsewhere. Within Subseries 1, the documents related to academic exchanges between Soviet and American scholars are particularly interesting and reflect with the difficulties with which such exchanges were executed.

Series X consists of writings by Harris' colleagues and contacts. Some have notes in the margins, while others do not. For the most part, the authors of these pieces appear elsewhere in the collection. Where this is the case, a cross-reference has been given.

Series XI: General Files contains a variety of documents that do not fall into the other series in Harris' Papers. It includes letters of evaluation, materials related to Harris' many job offers, and documents regarding Harris' appearances on film, television, and radio, including full transcripts of interviews and roundtable discussions. Subseries 4 and V are devoted, respectively, to Harris' charitable contributions, mostly to various libraries, and conferences he attended that did not fit into existing series. In Subseries VI, Harris' collection of obituaries, memorials, and memorial service invitations and programs have been gathered. Subseries VII consists of individual folders that did not fit into the above groupings. Most importantly, Subseries VII contains copies of Harris' own file summaries. Harris had intended to organize his collection prior to donating it to the University of Chicago's Special Collections, but did not complete the task before his death. The file summaries are Word documents detailing Harris' holdings within the categories that he had intended to use for the collection. When possible, these categories have been preserved and summaries have been included throughout the collection where appropriate. The summaries grouped here are those that no longer applied to the taxonomy of the collection.

Series XII contains oversize material. Series XIII includes materials for which access is restricted.
