Biographical Note

Edward A. Maser was born on December 23, 1923, to Andrew J. Maser and Bozena (Bessie) Slezak Maser. Andrew and Bozena Maser were born in Czechoslovakia but moved to the United States in 1912. Andrew and Bozena Maser had two children in Czechoslovakia -- Charles and John Maser-- and three children in the United States --Olga, Edward, and Ernest Maser. Edward Maser was born and raised in Detroit, Michigan and attended the University of Michigan from 1940 to 1942. In 1942, Maser took time off of school and joined the Air Corps--serving until 1945. Upon his return to civilian life, Maser continued his studies, earning a Master’s degree in Art History from the University of Chicago in 1948.

After earning his degree, Maser studied at the University in Frankfurt from 1949 to 1950 and the University of Florence from 1950 to1952. Upon returning to the United States, Maser lectured at the University of Kansas starting in 1953. He also worked at the University’s art museum. He then returned to the University of Chicago and earned his Ph.D. in Art History in 1957.

In 1959, Edward married Inge Maser in Lawrence, Kansas. Inge was born in April 1922 in Germany and moved to the United States in 1939. She traveled with Edward on his many research trips to Europe and held well-remembered dinner parties for the Department of Art History and graduate students.

Beginning in 1961, Maser became an associate professor at The University of Chicago. From 1961 to 1964, he served as the chairman of the Department of Art History. He also taught as a professor of Germanic studies and was affiliated with the Committee for Visual Arts. In 1974, he became the inaugural director of the Smart Museum at the University of Chicago, and developed the mission statement for the museum as well as helped to acquire the beginning of the art collection.

Throughout his career, he published fifteen books and numerous articles in English, Italian, and German. He and Inge also collected art privately; the Maser Collection featured medieval artworks, Old Master Paintings, and 19th-century paintings, drawings, and sculptures. He donated the bulk of his collection to the Smart Museum and to the Art Institute of Chicago.

For his dedication to researching and preserving Austrian arts and culture, Maser was awarded the Austrian Cross of Honor in Science and Art. He also received the Guggenheim fellowship for Humanities.

Edward Maser passed away in October 1988 in his home in Chicago. Inge Maser passed away in March 2008 in her home in Chicago.
