Scope Note

Also known as "Book of Devotions," this manuscript is a collection of medieval devotional literature, containing meditations, rules, stories, and exhortations. The first and longest section consists of the meditations, which are described by Goodspeed as "somewhat in the style of Thomas à Kempis." There follows a series of religious stories or "examples," one of which concerns a Cistercian monastery, which were apparently used as parables to illustrate certain points. The next section contains rules for observance of Lent, for the governance of a monastery, and a number of brief, general rules for monks. At the end of the manuscript there are three more stories, including a miracle story about Saint Anne, the mother of Mary. The text is in two distinct hands, and various later owners have inserted comments, including records of the Pauly family of Bamberg, Northern Bavaria.
