Biographical Note

William S. Murphy was an independent scholar of military history. He was interested in Irish participation in European armies, publishing on Irish brigades who fought for France and Spain during the American Revolutionary War (1775-1783). He was an associate of the Irish historian Emmet Larkin. He pursued a career in international finance in New York City during the 1950s and 1960s while continuing to research and write on military history.

Scope Note

Murphy grouped his research notes and primary sources according to the intended article they supported. Articles are followed by notes, bibliographies, biographies, and photostats and photocopies of material from archives in America, Mexico, and Europe. In some cases correspondence with archivists or other researchers is included. Files related to specific articles are followed by general research materials, organized by topic. The final box contains oversized materials. The collection spans 1923-1965. It contains detailed notes on the genealogy and biography of military personnel of Irish heritage.
