Historical Note

Established in Chicago in 1974, NAES College (Native American Educational Service) aimed to improve the leadership of Native American communities and to ensure that tribal knowledge, traditions and values play a major role in the higher education of Native students. Before closing its doors in 2007, NAES College offered a single degree, a Bachelor’s of Arts in General Studies with an emphasis in Public Policy, and tribal knowledge, community service, community development and leadership.

The American Indian Health Service is an organization founded in 1974 in Chicago. It is dedicated to the development of comprehensive health care programs for the Native American community of the metropolitan Chicago area.

Scope Note

The American Indian Health Service collection is organized into three series: Series I: Administration; Series II: Health Care Projects; Series III: Publications, Events, and Other Organizations. Materials range from 1974 to 1988, with the bulk of the material dating between 1977 and 1981. Series I consists of administrative documents, including the American Indian Health Service organizational structure, personnel policies, financial documents and contract agreements. Series I also contains a fragmentary collection of monthly reports, mostly for 1983 and 1984. Series II includes documents related to specific health care projects. It consists of grant and program proposals, namely the Foster Care Program and the Chicago American Indian Health Clinic, correspondence with the Federal Indian Health Service and the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS). Series III contains publications and newsletters from other organizations, press releases, and announcements for specific events. It includes materials and brochures from the American Indian Center, the California Urban Indian Health Council, or the Institute for Native American Development.
