Biographical Note

Rose Robinson (Rosabelle Lillian Wungnema) was born on March 27, 1932, in Kykotsmovi on the Hopi Reservation in Arizona. Daughter of Vina Jenkins and Percy Healling, she graduated from Carson City High School. After studying secretarial skills at the Haskell Institute (today Haskell Indian Nations College) in Lawrence, Kansas from 1948 to 1950, she started working for the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) office in Aberdeen, South Dakota. In 1951, she was transferred to the central office of the Bureau of Indian Affairs in Washington, D.C. In 1954, she married Richard H. Robinson, a British military member working in the British Embassy.

During her tenure at the BIA, Robinson first worked as a secretary to the Deputy Commissioner. Later, she moved to the Bureau’s Indian Arts and Crafts Board, eventually becoming the editor of the Board’s newsletter “Smoke Signals.” In 1967, Robinson was promoted to a public information officer for the BIA and editor of the Bureau's Indian Record. Documents as well as publications from this stage of Robinson’s career are represented in the collection.

In early 1970s, Robinson joined other Native American journalists to found the American Indian Press Association (AIPA). In addition to her role on the Association’s board, Robinson was named the executive editor in 1973. AIPA had three purposes: to provide a news service to member newspapers; to help members improve the technical and editorial quality of their papers; and to provide a network for Native American journalists. In 1975, AIPA closed its doors largely due to the inability to raise funds. The Association’s archival materials, including correspondence and Native American newspapers, were later entrusted to Rose Robinson and are preserved in this collection.

In 1976, Rose Robinson began working at the Phelps-Stokes Fund, a non-profit for the advancement of social and educational development. First as Director, then as Vice President of the Fund’s American Indian Program, Robinson organized a foundation news service to help tribal communities and Native American education groups identify private funding. She also edited “The Exchange,” a magazine that focused on fundraising efforts in the Native American community. Robinson’s numerous activities at the Phelps-Stokes Fund as well as research and training materials on fundraising and non-profit management are well-documented in the collection.

From 1987 to 1989, she worked for the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America as Director of the Commission for Multicultural Ministries in Chicago. Later in her career, Rose Robinson founded her own consultancy, RRS Associates, and continued to provide consulting services to organizations and programs, such as American Indian National Bank, Council on Foundations, Gettysburg College, and Arrow, Inc.

Other organizations she served in varying capacities include American Indian Graduate Center, National American Indian Council, National Congress of American Indians, National Indian Education Association, Native American Science Education Committee, and North American Indian Women’s Association. She also consulted for her native Hopi Pueblo tribe in a professional capacity. Her professional activities in these organizations are well represented in the collection. She also contributed to or led many conferences, such as annual conventions of the National Congress of American Indians, and workshops on fundraising and Native American advocacy issues.

In addition to her abovementioned role as journal editor, Robinson compiled the “Directory of National Congress of American Indians,” co-edited “The Who, What, Why and How of Private Sector Fundraising,” and published “Robinson’s Redbook – A Native American Guide to Washington D.C.” An unpublished manuscript titled “Red Indian Travels in West Africa” is preserved in the collection, documenting her trip to West Africa while working at the Phelps-Stokes Fund.

Rose Robinson’s lifelong commitment to Native American social and educational issues was recognized by various honors and awards. She received the National Indian Media Woman of the Year in 1981. In 1983, she was honored by the National Congress of American Indians for her assistance to the organization’s development efforts.

Rose Robinson divorced from her husband in 1974, with whom she had three children. She died on September 17, 1995, in Alexandria, VA.

After her death, Rose Robinson’s papers were donated to the Native American Educational Services (NAES) College in Chicago as a research collection. Later, the collection was transferred to the University of Chicago’s Hanna Holborn Gray Special Collections Research Center.

Series IV: Subject Files

Series IV, Subject Files, contains research materials and publications collected by Rose Robinson throughout her career on a variety of subjects related to Native American issues. The series is divided thematically into subseries on arts & culture, economy, education, environment & nature, government, history, human services, law, literature, Native American periodicals, other publications & clippings, people, philanthropy & non-profit management, philosophy & religion. The folders in these subseries are organized chronologically. Mention should be made of Subseries 10 that consists of numerous Native American periodicals from early 1970s. Likely acquired by American Indian Press Association, these periodicals illustrate the history of Native American print media, whether local, regional, or national throughout the U.S. in that period.
