The John A. Simpson Papers Addenda include professional and personal correspondence, scientific research notes, lectures and articles, teaching materials, grant proposals, technical reports and drawings, and audio visual materials. The collection dates from 1926 to 2002, but the bulk of the material is from the 1960s through the 1990s. This addenda supplements and largely mirrors the organization of the main collection of the
The Simpson Papers Addenda is divided into fourteen series.
Series I: Correspondence includes both professional correspondence and files which Simpson designated “personal” correspondence. The former pertains principally to Simpson’s scientific and professional activities, the latter to non-scientific community and family-related matters.
Series II: University of Chicago contains papers related to Simpson's teaching and administrative duties at the University.
Series III: Professional Affiliations and Public Activity and Series IV: Lectures and Conferences document Simpson’s relationships with a number of scientific organizations, and his public appearances, ranging from speaking engagements to congressional testimony.
Series V: Scientific Writings and Projects includes copies of articles and other texts by Simpson, and materials related to their preparation. It is closely linked to the material in Series VIII.
Series VI: Appointment Books contains Simpson's personal calendars for 1989-2000, and an appointment book for 1944-1945. Series VII: Scientific Notebooks, contains notebooks with research and projects notes, some grouped according to a letter and number system devised by Simpson.
Series VIII: Scientific Projects contains papers produced by Simpson and his colleagues, students and LASR staff concerning individual research projects and space missions.
