The University of Chicago Department of Sociology was founded in 1892 as the first academic department of sociology in the United States.
This volume of Sociology Department minutes covers a 13 year period although minutes do not exist (or were not taken) for all meetings.
As a rule the minutes are quite brief and cover some of the following issues: approval of thesis topics, results of student examinations, petitions to waive departmental requirements, scheduling of courses, and other routine matters of an administrative rather than a scholarly nature.
