Scope Note

James Carey of the University of Illinois conducted this series of interviews with individuals who had been graduate students in the University of Chicago's Department of Sociology during the 1920's and 1930's. A wide range of topics are covered in each interview: family and academic background; motivations for pursuing graduate studies in sociology and for choosing the University of Chicago; reminiscences regarding particular faculty members and fellow students; the climate of the Department of Sociology; the research and publications of the individual interviewed, with particular attention to student work.

Carey conducted the interviews as research for his book Sociology and Public Affairs: The Chicago School (Beverly Hills, California: Sage, 1975), volume 16 in the Sage Library of Social Research. These transcriptions were acquired by the Department of Special Collections through Professor Morris Janowitz. Information regarding interview locations was taken from the envelopes (now discarded) in which the transcripts were received. Arrangement is alphabetical by surnames of persons interviewed.
