Scope Note

A stereograph consists of two nearly-identical (often-photographic) images which form a three-dimensional image when viewed through a stereoscope. Stereographs in this collection were advertised as “views” of people, landscape, artifacts, and locales. When published as a collection, stereographs may be organized by theme or, as is the case with collections such as Series I Subseries 1, a visual-textual “tour” that uses written narrative to assemble discrete stereographs into a coherent sequence of “views.”

This collection, which consists of over 1,400 stereograph cards from a number of publishers and related materials dating from late-nineteenth and early-twentieth century, is organized as follows.

Series I contains complete or near-complete sets of stereographs, sometimes accompanied by their original guidebooks. Stereographs in this series are not individually described, but are ordered instead according to their internal sequence or, when applicable, in the sequence in which they appear in the guidebook. Note that not all stereographic images referred to in the guidebooks appear in our collection, and that there may also be duplicates.

Series II contains stereographs without corresponding guidebooks, as well as highly incomplete sets. The stereographs in this series are listed individually. Descriptions are lifted from the items, and a provisional description is supplied (in square brackets) when none is otherwise available. This series is organized by publisher.

Series III contains miscellaneous materials related to stereography, including empty boxes formerly containing stereograph sets, maps, and guidebooks unaccompanied by stereographs.

It is important to note that the descriptions of individual stereographs given in the guidebook or on the cards themselves, though faithfully represented in this finding aid, are sometimes inaccurate.
