Historical Note

Cancer research has involved multiple different departments and research centers within the University of Chicago Medical Center. Cancer research has specifically been centered within the Argonne Cancer Research Hospital, and the Ben May Laboratory located within the Nathan Goldblatt Memorial Hospital. Examples of research conducted at the university are how individual cells are affected by radiation through proton beams, controllable cell mutations, the enzyme system of cancer cells, and radiation therapy through radioactive cobalt.

The University of Chicago Cancer Research Foundation was founded by Maurice Goldblatt in 1947. Through the combined efforts of the Cancer Research Foundation and its many associates, the University was able to build the Nathan Goldblatt Memorial Hospital and the cyclotron building in 1949 and fund cancer research.
