Overview

The University Archives was established as part of the University of Chicago Library in 1946. It was incorporated within the Department of Special Collections in 1953 and forms part of the holdings of the Special Collections Research Center. Included in the Archives are official records and publications; minutes of the Board of Trustees and other boards and statutory bodies; records of administrative units including academic divisions, professional schools, departments, offices, programs, and interdisciplinary committees; papers of faculty members, trustees, administrators, students, and alumni; serial publications; photographs; video and film; sound recordings; and memorabilia. The archives of the John Crerar Library were added in 1984. The current extent of the holdings of the Archives is 32,315 linear feet.

The Archives also holds the records of a number of related institutions and organizations.
