How
Do I Find Rare Books?
Special Collections
has a wealth of rare materials across a wide range of subject areas. Our
rare book holdings total approximately 265,000
volumes, and consist of the general rare book collections as well as a
number of separately named collections (for example, the Ludwig
Rosenberger Library of Judaica). It may seem a daunting task to find
the books in our collection which pertain to your specific research, but
there are several easy ways to narrow your search to Special Collections
materials. If you've never used the online catalog before, you may want
to review the Library's guide
to finding books before starting on your quest for primary sources.
Simple Search:
Limiting by "Special Collections"
The simplest way to find rare books in the online catalog
is to limit your search to "Special Collections." Say you were
looking for early editions of Charles Darwin's On the Origin of Species
for your History of Science class paper.
- From the library
catalog home page, click on the "Advanced Keyword" tab at
the top of the page. From the Advanced search module, you are able to
tailor your search in a variety of ways.
- Type origin
of species into the blank space next to the title box.
- Type darwin
into the blank space next to the author box.
- Now scroll down
to the "Limits" section in the middle of the page. From here,
you can limit your search by language, location, and/or format.
- Scroll down and
select Special Collections in the limits box.
- Click the Go
button.
- See the results
of this search.
About 15 editions are found in the online catalog, including
several very early editions and the first edition of On the Origin
of Species.
