Research at the Center The Special Collections Research Center offers reference services on-site Monday through Friday, 8:30am-4:45pm. For off-site reference service please use our Special Collections e-mail reference form. Special Collections staff are unable to provide reference assistance by telephone. The reference staff at Special Collections is committed to helping you navigate the enormous range of resources available to you and assuring that you are comfortable using them. The best way to understand the collections and how they may assist you in your research or teaching is to stop by and talk to a member of our reference staff. They can help you develop strategies for effectively searching the Library Catalog and help you probe the archival and manuscript collections. If you have never used Special Collections, or if you are starting work on your B.A. paper you may find the following guides useful:
Reference Collections In addition to our extensive rare book, archival, and manuscript collections, we maintain an in-depth, non-circulating reference collection on open shelves. The archival reference collection includes sets of several University serial publications such as the University of Chicago Annual Register, the Official Publications containing course announcements, the Cap and Gown, and the University of Chicago Magazine, as well as secondary sources related to the history of the University of Chicago. The rare book reference collection contains reference bibliographies, guides and catalogs to rare book collections at other institutions, encyclopedias and dictionaries, and general works on the history of the book. American Book Prices Current and the Illustrated Incunabula Short-Title Catalog are available on CD-ROM. The Manuscript Search Room houses reference sources relating to early manuscripts.
