Beilstein CrossFirePlusReactions (via the Commander
interface). MDL Information Systems, Inc.
This database is the electronic equivalent of the entire
Beilstein Handbuch der Organischen Chemie and all
supplements. Additional records have also been added since the
completion of the last print supplement. Records include not only
physical and chemical data for more than 6 million organic
compounds, but also more than 5 million reactions, spectral
information, and origins of natural products. More than 70
different fields are searchable in the database, including UV, NMR,
IR and mass spectral data, solubility, electrochemical properties,
density, thermodynamic values and much more. This extremely
powerful tool is available to University of Chicago users from
terminals in the Chemistry Library and the Crerar Library. The
software may also be downloaded by authorized users from the
Chemistry Library website (see the URL in this entry). The
interface is a bit challenging to use, so detailed user guides have
been developed and are also available from the Chemistry Library
website. Search advice and assistance is available by contacting
the Chemistry Librarian.

Gmelin via the Commander Interface. MDL
Information Systems, Inc.
Online version of the Gmelin handbook is available via the
Commander interface (same interface for Beilstein). Over 1.4
million compounds are covered, including polymers, ceramics,
glasses, minerals and alloys. Data is reported from 1772-present.
Data in the following categories may be reported: characterization,
including material composition and structural data, chemical
properties, including preparation and reaction details, condensed
phase data, electric, magnetic, mechanical, molecular, and optical
properties, electrochemistry, phase transition data, quantum
chemical calculations, spectroscopy, systemic properties, such as
solubility and vapor pressure in solution, thermodynamics,
transport phenomena, thermal properties. Access is provided from
workstations in the Chemistry Library and the Crerar Library.
Manuals for the use of this database are available in the Chemistry
Library. The client software may be downloaded by authorized
University of Chicago users for use in labs and offices on campus.
Search assistance and advice are also available from the Chemistry
Librarian.

Gmelin Handbuch der anorganischen Chemie. 8th
edition. Multi-volume set with supplements Springer-Verlag: Berlin,
1924-1996.
This comprehensive compilation provides critically evaluated data
for elements, inorganic and organometallic compounds in the context
of scholarly monographs. The set is organized by element. More than
one hundred years of data is included. Much of the set is published
in German, with more recent volumes appearing in English. There is
a formula index available. An online version is also available and
may be used as a source of references to the print handbook, which
contains much more detail than the online file. See Gmelin via
the Commander Interface for more information.
