Introduction
Cornetist Jimmy McPartland (1907-1991) was one of the most influential figures in the history of jazz in Chicago. Together with the other members of the Austin High Gang of the 1920's, he is honored as an originator of the style known as "Chicago jazz". The McPartland collection came to the Library's Chicago Jazz Archive in 1990, which the McPartlands celebrated with a benefit concert for the Archive.
The collection contains a wealth of material documenting Jimmy McPartland's career in jazz, much of which sheds light on the careers of his musical contemporaries. It includes photos, reviews, concert programs and posters, correspondence, recordings, and material from the making of the television program The Magic Horn.
Please note that the items themselves are not available online; this document is only a guide to locating materials in the collection.
The Chicago Jazz Archive would like to thank Jimmy and Marian McPartland for their generosity in making this collection available to historians and jazz lovers.
