A guide to locating biomedical books in the library

All Library resources, whether in print or electronic format are listed in Lens. Look there to see the holdings for Crerar and all other University of Chicago Library holdings. If you are having difficulty using Lens or you want to confirm the availability or location of a book, please contact the Reference desk at 773-702-7715.

Print books

Most books you need will be shelved on the second floor by the call numbers QH (Natural History/General Biology) through R (Medicine).

Below are the areas where you could find a biomedical book.  See the call number guide to find out on which floor material is located, or ask for help at the Reference Desk.

  • Second floor bookstacks, call numbers QH - RZ (second floor map)
  • Lower level bookstacks, call numbers TN - Z (Lower Level map)
  • Thrid floor bookstacks, call numbers A - QE; S - TL (third floor map)
  • 1st Floor Reference Collection (first floor map)
  • 1st Floor Reserve Desk (first floor map); behind the Circulation/ Reserves counter.  For more information on Reserves, click here.
  • Crerar, Dewey Collection (Lower Level map). Take the stairs at the west end of the building, and turn left. Books are arranged in compact shelving. If you need help operating the shelving please go to the Circulation/Reserves Desk.

What if the book is off the shelf?

If you've looked for a book that that is supposed to be on the shelf ("not charged") try these steps:

  • If the book is checked out place a recall to have it returned.
  • Look in the re-shelving areas behind the Circulation/Reserves counter and on the book trucks at the top of the stairwells on the second or third floors, depending on call number.
  • Look in both photocopier rooms on each floor.
  • Check at the Reference Desk to be certain of your information.
  • Fill out a Search Request Form. (We'll do the looking from this point on.) Or you can click on the "Can't find it?" link in the Lens Search or Library Catalog record for that item. Searches take between 1-5 working days.

What if the Library doesn't own the book I need?

Use the Library's free Interlibrary Loan service to request a the book(s) you need.
