Remote Access

Due to licensing agreements, remote access to electronic library resources is restricted to faculty, students, and staff of the University of Chicago with a current computing account (CNetID) and Medical Center employees with a CNetID or a UCHAD network ID.

Current University faculty, students, and staff

Please see Connecting to Electronic Resources.

Medical Center employees

Physicians with faculty appointments and house staff (residents and fellows) are eligible for CNetIDs and should follow the instructions above for current University faculty, students, and staff.  For more information on CNetID eligibility, go to http://nsit.uchicago.edu/policies/eligibilityfaq/.

Medical Center employees without a CNetID may access electronic resources remotely with a UCHAD network ID.  Begin at the John Crerar Library web site.  When prompted to authenticate with a CNetID and password, use your UCHAD ID and password.  Please note that these instructions apply to remote access to library resources only, and not the Medical Center Intranet or other UCMC applications.  If you do not know your UCHAD ID, contact the Medical Center Help Desk at 2-3456.

Why can I access an ejournal at work, but not at home?

You likely can access the ejournal at home, you just need to authenticate by following the instructions above.  Here is why you need to authenticate.  While on the University campus or at the Medical Center, access is available to the Library's electronic resources because your computer's IP address identifies you as an authorized user.  The electronic resource vendor knows which IP addresses are included in the Library's networks, and restricts access to these IP numbers.  When accessing the same resource from home, your IP address is not a recognized address, and you must there for authenticate.

How can I access the full text of an article found in PubMed while at home?

Begin by accessing PubMed here: http://www.lib.uchicago.edu/h/pubmed.  This website is configured for the University of Chicago Library and you will see the Find It! button icon in article, linking you to the full text, if available.  It is important to use the Find It! icon and not the publisher icon when using PubMed from home, as Find It! initiates the authentication process, which is necessary to access the full text of the Library's ejournals.  Clicking on Find It will launch a new tab or window, so make sure you allow pop-ups.  If the full text of the article is available, there will be a link (or several links) to it in the Find It! window.  Clicking on the link will open the article in another tab or window.  In some cases, you will be taken to the journal web page and need to browse for the article.

Problems?

If you are unable to connect to a specific electronic journal or database listed in Lens (the Library search engine), E-Journals, or the Database Finder, please contact the Library. We will investigate the problem.  You may also call the Crerar Reference Desk at 773-702-7715 during our operating hours.
