Abdullah Freres, ca. 1878 "View in a Turkish Cemetery showing the various styles of gravestones surrounded by cypress trees. The cypress is supposed to neutralise all pestilential exhalations. The graves of the males are distinguished by the fez or turban which surmounts the stone, while those of the females are generally the richest and finished at the top with a palm branch. The gravestones are all of white marble with the carved inscriptions illuminated with various colors; such as red, black, blue, green, etc. As a new grave is opened for each body the cemeteries extend for miles around the city. That of Scutari is now most frequented on account of the Moslem belief that ultimately they will be driven from Europe. Joseph Moore, Jr., Hotel Byzance, Constantinople, March 15, 1878."
