and Indexes of Literature Published in Periodicals Before 1900. Lanham,
Md.: Scarecrow Press, 2000. Lists close to 400 of the indexes, organized

scope seems too broad to be true (as with several online sources), Balay's
discussions are lengthy and evaluative--a critical perspective that should
make this book particularly useful on the reference shelf. Much of this
literature is not accessible through any other indexes. (Choice, July

book. edited by Eva Martin Sartori and Dorothy
Wynne Zimmerman. New York: Greenwood Press, 1991. Well-edited and written
biographical dictionary provides excellent introductory information
on the 52 French women writers selected for inclusion - some well-known,
some, as the editors admit, "unknown even to the specialist."
The major criterion for inclusion was a substantial body of published
work. The introduction surveys the position of women in French literary
life from the 12th century to the current period. Contains signed articles,
some quite long, providing a biography, a discussion of major themes,
a survey of criticism, and a bibliography of primary works, English
translations, and selected critical studies. Organized chronologically
with a list of authors by date of birth at the end of the volume are
helpful. Title and subject indexes. (Choice, May 1992) Harvey, Sir Paul. The Oxford Companion to

Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1976. An abridged, revised, and updated version
of Harvey. The New Oxford Companion to Literature in French.
Edited by Peter France. Oxford; New York : Clarendon Press, 1995. This
New Oxford Companion reflects a change in focus from its predecessors,
The Oxford Companion to French Literature, ed. by Paul Harvey (1959),
and The Concise Oxford Dictionary of French Literature. The words
"literature in French" in the title signal this change: the
companion includes 200 new entries on Francophone literature (writing
in French outside France in former French possessions), as well as entries
on Provençal (or Occitan) and Breton literature (literature in
other languages native to France). The work also updates recent research
on literary, cultural, and political history with entries on versification,
fin'amor, libraries, and occupation and resistance. It includes entries
on new developments and shifts in French literature such as music hall,
detective fiction, photo-roman, and the bande dessinée. At the
book's beginning the editor helpfully provides a chronology, which lists,
alongside "reigning monarch, or regime," corresponding historical
and cultural events and prominent authors of each period. The editor also
includes maps of France at different periods and a map of central Paris.
Asterisks beside a title or author indicate separate entries in the book.
(Choice, November 1995) Levi, Anthony. Guide to French literature. Chicago:
St. James Press, c1992-94. Contents: v.1, Beginnings to 1789; v. 2,
1789 to the present. Entries are mostly devoted to the life and work
of individual writers, although some substantial essays discuss literary,
theological, and philosophical movements and literary controversies
(e.g., "Jansenism," the "Querelle des Anciens et Des
Modernes"). Levi provides detailed accounts of writers' lives and,
in his discussion of their works, emphasizes the ideological, sociological,
and political context. Additional features include a chronology of events,
a title index, and a general index that also contains additional brief
entries on subjects and authors not treated separately in the text.
Weak in its treatment of women writers. (Choice, April 1994) Lambdin, Robert T., and Laura C. Lambdin. Encyclopedia
of Medieval Literature. Westport, Conn.: Greenwood Press, 2000.
Scholarly and thorough, this encyclopedia is an excellent starting point
to research topics pertaining to the Middle Ages. Furnishing background
information about historical figures, genres, and myriad literary works,
it covers the 1,000 years (c.500-1500 CE) commonly accepted as the medieval
period. Two kinds of entries (brief and expanded) provide relatively
comprehensive outlines of their topics, followed by informative essays.
Each topic includes selected bibliographies, and the work ends with
an extensive general bibliography. (Choice, February 2001) Malinowski, Sharon, ed. Gay & Lesbian Literature.
