Literature

Balay Robert. Early Periodical Indexes: Bibliographies and Indexes of Literature Published in Periodicals Before 1900. Lanham, Md.: Scarecrow Press, 2000. Lists close to 400 of the indexes, organized under broad subjects, with access by authors, titles, specific subjects, and dates. Annotations briefly describe the scope of each index and, when pertinent, the history. For general indexes, especially the ones whose scope seems too broad to be true (as with several online sources), Balay's discussions are lengthy and evaluative--a critical perspective that should make this book particularly useful on the reference shelf. Much of this literature is not accessible through any other indexes. (Choice, July 2001)

Dizionario Letterario Bompiani delle Opere e Dei Personaggi di Tutti i Tempi e di Tutte le Letterature. 9 vols. Milan: V. Bompiani, 1947-57. An encyclopedia listing and describing the works of all times and all countries in literature, art, and music (though, now a bit outdated, of course). The emphasis is on literature; lavishly illustrated with colored plates and b/w pictures. Volume 1 is devoted to intellectual movements, arranged alphabetically. The main part of the work consists of signed articles, arranged alphabetically in the Italian form of the title of the work, followed by the original title in brackets. Brief biographical notes are usually included in the entries. Volume 8 is a dictionary of literary characters (again, alphabetized according to the Italian spelling of the name). Volume 9 includes synoptic tables showing literary development in all parts of the world; an index of titles in the original and of their Italian translations; and author and illustrations indexes. A two-volume Appendice published in 1964-66 updates the original set (Regenstein Stacks PN41.D6 Suppl.). The sister volume: Dizionario letterario Bompiani degli autori di tutti i tempi e di tutte le letterature -- Regenstein Stacks PN41.D59 -- is less general in scope and provides more detailed information on authors. The two complement each other.

Birkett, Jennifer and Kearns, James. A Guide to French Literature: From Early Modern to Postmodern. New York : St. Martin's Press, 1997. Provides information on writers from from Rabelais to Kristeva; placing writers in their time and place among their contemporaries, revealing the importance of their work at the time of publication and its influence on French literature and language. The authors illuminate the role of religion and politics in the development of the essay, poetry, novel, and the theater of France, differentiating the historical, the classical, the comic, morality, revolution, the scientific, romanticism, realism, symbolism, and naturalism. The role of structuralism in contemporary criticism is well defined; semiotics is treated briefly; deconstruction is not considered. One of the most informative sections of the guide is that devoted to the women's movement and the rise of feminist literature. Equally interesting is the material on Francophone literature from Canada to sub-Saharan Africa. (Choice, January 1998)

French women writers: a bio-bibliographical source book. edited by Eva Martin Sartori and Dorothy Wynne Zimmerman. New York: Greenwood Press, 1991. Well-edited and written biographical dictionary provides excellent introductory information on the 52 French women writers selected for inclusion - some well-known, some, as the editors admit, "unknown even to the specialist." The major criterion for inclusion was a substantial body of published work. The introduction surveys the position of women in French literary life from the 12th century to the current period. Contains signed articles, some quite long, providing a biography, a discussion of major themes, a survey of criticism, and a bibliography of primary works, English translations, and selected critical studies. Organized chronologically with a list of authors by date of birth at the end of the volume are helpful. Title and subject indexes. (Choice, May 1992)

The New Oxford Companion to Literature in French. Edited by Peter France. Oxford; New York : Clarendon Press, 1995. This New Oxford Companion reflects a change in focus from its predecessors, The Oxford Companion to French Literature, ed. by Paul Harvey (1959), and The Concise Oxford Dictionary of French Literature. The words "literature in French" in the title signal this change: the companion includes 200 new entries on Francophone literature (writing in French outside France in former French possessions), as well as entries on Provençal (or Occitan) and Breton literature (literature in other languages native to France). The work also updates recent research on literary, cultural, and political history with entries on versification, fin'amor, libraries, and occupation and resistance. It includes entries on new developments and shifts in French literature such as music hall, detective fiction, photo-roman, and the bande dessinée. At the book's beginning the editor helpfully provides a chronology, which lists, alongside "reigning monarch, or regime," corresponding historical and cultural events and prominent authors of each period. The editor also includes maps of France at different periods and a map of central Paris. Asterisks beside a title or author indicate separate entries in the book. (Choice, November 1995)

Levi, Anthony. Guide to French literature. Chicago: St. James Press, c1992-94. Contents: v.1, Beginnings to 1789; v. 2, 1789 to the present. Levi provides detailed accounts of writers' lives and, in his discussion of their works, emphasizes the ideological, sociological, and political context. Additional features include a chronology of events, a title index, and a general index that also contains additional brief entries on subjects and authors not treated separately in the text. Weak in its treatment of women writers. (Choice, April 1994)

Two kinds of entries (brief and expanded) provide relatively comprehensive outlines of their topics, followed by informative essays. Each topic includes selected bibliographies, and the work ends with an extensive general bibliography. (Choice, February 2001)
