Literature

AIDA: Articoli italiani di periodici accademici / Bibliography of Italian Periodical Literature; 1997-present: Although listed above under "General Indexes," AIDA is listed here again because of its importance for Italian literary studies and depth of coverage. AIDA provides bibliographic information on well over 100.000 journal articles from 968 journals covering the Humanities and Social Sciences for the years 1997ff.

Balay Robert. Early Periodical Indexes: Bibliographies and Indexes of Literature Published in Periodicals Before 1900. Lanham, Md.: Scarecrow Press, 2000. Lists close to 400 of the indexes, organized under broad subjects, with access by authors, titles, specific subjects, and dates. Annotations briefly describe the scope of each index and, when pertinent, the history. For general indexes, especially the ones whose scope seems too broad to be true (as with several online sources), Balay's discussions are lengthy and evaluative--a critical perspective that should make this book particularly useful on the reference shelf. Much of this literature is not accessible through any other indexes. (Choice, July 2001)

The words have been arranged in families. The forms of verbs appear under the infinitive, and adjectives are grouped under categories of masculine and feminine. It is a user friendly guide for reading and rapid reference. It uses conventions and sets of numbers indicating the Canto first, then the number of the line. Sanctis, Francesco de. History of Italian Literature. 2 vols. Trans. Joan Redfern. New York: Barnes, 1968. Benedetto Croce in the introduction of this book gives reasons why De Sanctis' work represents a landmark in the field of literature and history. Croce sustains that the approach taken by De Sanctis disentangles literature from the arbitrariness of fixed rules and models. This history was published for the first time in 1870-71, during the Italian Romantic period, but it was not until the 1900's when it was rediscovered. It starts in the XIII century, and ends in the civil reform in the 19th century.
