Basic Sources for Identifying Tests
Directory of Unpublished Experimental Mental Measures,
1974-- .
BF431.G58 RR4
This directory is intended "to provide researchers
ready access to sources of recently developed experimental measures." For
the most part, only American journals were used as sources. Entries arranged
under categories, e.g., Achievement. Each entry gives test name, purpose, number
of items, format, author, journal reference, and related research. Index. Authors
and publishers have varied over the years. The most recent volume is 7, published
in 1997. There is a Title Index to all 7 volumes, prepared by Martin
Jamison, and published in 2001 (BF431 .J29 2001 RR4).
ETS Test Collection
| Tests in Microfiche
The Educational
Testing Service (ETS) offers a free search facility into its database of
more than 25,000 citations to tests and other measurement devices. Many of these
instruments are not commercially published and, for some, the ETS sells copies
in microfiche.
A subset of the ETS Test Collection comprises
Tests in Microfiche, to which the UofC Library subscribes
(Regenstein, Microforms, Floor 3, Call No.: microfcLB3051.T474). A list
of which tests are included in Tests in Microfiche is offered by Helen Hough
in her resource Tests
and Measures in the Social Sciences: Tests available in compilation volumes
(described below). Available in print is the ETS test collection :
cumulative index to tests in microfiche 1975-2000 (LB3051.E79
Index RR4).
ETS Test Collection Catalog, 1986--
LB3051.E790 RR4
This listing of selected items in the collection
of the Educational Testing Service (ETS) includes abstracts, availability information,
and notes the age/grade for which the test is intended. The volumes are topically
organized and some volumes have been reissued in 2nd editions. The volumes are:
v. 1. Achievement tests and measurement devices -- v. 2. Vocational tests and
measurement devices -- v. 3. Tests for special populations -- v. 4. Cognitive
aptitude and intelligence tests -- v. 5. Attitude tests -- v. 6. Affective measures
and personality tests.
Health
and Psychosocial Instruments (HAPI)--via OVID
Produced by Behavioral Measurement Database Services,
this database indexes materials from 1985 to the present. It provides access
to information on measurement instruments (i.e., questionnaires, interview schedules,
checklists, index measures, coding schemes/manuals, rating scales, projective
techniques, vignettes/scenarios, tests) in the health fields, psychosocial sciences,
organizational behavior, and library and information science. The database contains
citations to actual test documents and bibliographic citations to journal articles
and compilations which contain information about specific test instruments.
You can limit searches to "primary source" to retrieve only thos citations
to sources where a copy of the measurement instrument is included.
Mental
Measurements Yearbook (MMY)--via OVID
This searchable database includes the full-text
of the reviews and descriptive information about tests and measurement instruments
that are contained in the print title of the same name (see description below).
Full-text begins with the 9th edition (1980) of the printed MMY and continues
to the present. The database is updated every six months. MMY is produced by
the Buros Institute of Mental Measurements
and its website includes a variety of useful information. The Instructional
Resources section offers "How To" guides and a MMY
Index covering all the print volumes since 1985. Buros also offers a free
service, Test Reviews Online,
that includes citations to, and excerpts from, the complete MMY (and customers
can then purchase the complete review if they do not have other access).
Mental Measurements Yearbook (MMY), 1938-- .
Z5814.P8R91 RR4
Published by the Buros Institute of Mental Measurements,
the most recent edition is the 16th (c2005). Typical MMY test entries include
descriptive information, one or two lengthy professional reviews, and reviewer
references. Test numbers, rather than page numbers, are used in the indexes.
A variety of indexes are offered, including an index of acronyms, a classified
subject index (utilizing 18 major categories such as "achievement"),
and a score index that lists the variables measured by the tests. Also available
is a publisher index. Note that these indexes appear in the print version but
are not accessible directly in the electronic version. To be reviewed in the
MMY a test must be commercially available, be published in the English language,
and be new, revised, or widely used since it last appeared in the MMY series.
Beginning with the Fourteenth Mental Measurements Yearbook (2001), tests also
must provide sufficient documentation supporting their technical quality to
meet criteria for review. Between the years 1988 and 1999, the Buros Institute
produced Supplements to the Ninth through Thirteenth Mental Measurements Yearbooks.
Beginning with the Fourteenth Mental Measurements Yearbook, the Supplements
were discontinued. The electronic version of MMY is updated before the print
volume is published.
PsycInfo
This database, produced by the American Psychological
Association (APA), indexes journal literature in the field of psychology as
well as books, book chapters, reports, and dissertations. PsycInfo offers a
search limit of "Tests and Measures"; this field provides the names
of tests that were used in the study or for an article where the test itself
was the topic. If the document includes the actual test in its entirety, PsycInfo
adds the word Appended in the Tests & Measures field.
The APA offers much more guidance through its PsycInfo Search
Help/Training Center, including Tips
for Searching for Tests. Also available is an FAQ
on Finding Information about Tests.
Test Critiques, 1984-- . Richard C. Sweetland, Daniel J.
Keyser, general editors. Published by Pro-Ed.
BF176.T43 RR4
Eleven volumes have been published to date. In
non-technical language, this title provides evaluative studies of more than
800 of the most widely used assessment instruments. The critiques offer the
reader information on each individual test, such as practical applications and
uses, settings in which the test is used, appropriate as well as inappropriate
subjects, and guidelines for administration, scoring, and interpretation. The
critiques cite normative data and validity and reliability information, as well
as what other experts have said about the test.
Tests: A Comprehensive Reference for Assessments in Psychology, Education,
and Business. Richard C. Sweetland, Daniel J. Keyser, general editors.

BF176.T430 2003 RR4
Provides basic information on the most commonly
used tests, including publiser, cost and intended audience. Entries are organized
by subject and numerous indexes are offered, including one for tests appropriate
for physically impaired test-takers.
Tests
and Measures in the Social Sciences: Tests available in compilation volumes
Thanks to the work of Helen Hough, Health
Sciences Librarian at the University of Texas at Arlington, this freely available
resource indexes more than 100 titles that provide the text of more than 10,000
instruments. The website also offers help pages and a list of links to FAQs
about locating tests and measures
Tests in Print (TIP), 1961-- .
Z5814.E9T47 RR4
Published intermittently by the Buros Institute
of Mental Measurements, the most recent edition is the 6th, 2002. The objective
is to provide a comprehensive listing of all commercially available tests published
in English. For each title, the entry includes information about the test's
construction, its appropriate uses, and bibliographies of references. The following
indexes are offered: MMY test reviewers -- Index of titles -- Index of recently
out-of-print tests --Index of acronyms -- Classified subject index --Publishers
directory and index -- Index of names -- Score index. Buros offers a Tip
Sheet for using this resource.

Early Childhood
Measures Profiles
This project was made possible by support from
the SEED Consortium of federal agencies to the National Institute of Child Health
and Human Development Family and Child Well-being Research Network The SEED
Consortium (Science and the Ecology of Early Development) involves federal agencies
working together to lay the groundwork for and fund research on issues pertaining
to the development of young children, and especially how specific environments
(ecologies) can best suport early development. The compendium includes profiles
of early childhood assessments that arecommonly used to measure areas of development,
including language and literacy, cognition, mathematical understanding, social
and emotional competency, and approaches to learning. The profiles include information
such as the purposes of the measure, the population it was developed with, the
age range intended for, key constructs covered, who administers the measure
and the skill level required, what is required of the child during administration
and about how long administration takes, the age ranges it is appropriate for,
and a summary of reliability and validity data for the measure. (Thanks to Margit
Zsolnay for alerting me to this resource and the description of content).
